The Heart of Danceness

The Writer's Surrender
You know how in the movie Apocalypse Now, shit gets weirder and weirder the deeper that Williard goes upriver to seek out Colonel Kurtz?

Sometimes, I feel like that as I travel deeper and deeper into the meta-community of Second Life dance performance.

The people you come across… the performances… the venues… stranger and stranger… and pretty soon, you find that you’re a stranger to yourself.

Who am I?
What the hell am I doing here?
Why am I doing this?

The stories people tell you, the history and the dynamics and the drama.

I’ve said this before, but will say it again…

The Law of Triangles:
A likes B
B likes C
A hates the shit out of C

Sometimes, you’re A. Or B. Or C.

Accept that as law. Deal with it.

So, there’s a history there. Some folks were here or there, set out on their own or banded together with others. Groups come and go, some endure. They rise and fall over time.

Some of the classics are on YouTube, others are captured in photos in ancient Flickr albums, maybe a routine here or a promo poster there.

I can imagine an old avatars rest home, folks looking back at their digital careers, remembering when. Or a museum, their performances available in holography.

Will there be dance in Sansar? Will there be anything there, really?

What will remain, or do we only leave our footprints in the wet sand, erased in time?

The boat is coming up on the shore, and the natives are all out to watch us as we pull in.

Oh, look what you've done to this rock 'n' roll clown

Okay, so yeah, I shoot photos. But who cares, man.
What I want to know is who else shoots photos of Second Life Dance?
I know Elli does, and Sophie, and Hayden, and Laura and Sev, and Andy...
Here's one by Willo that I touched up for her for fun...

Playing a bit with Willo's photo...

And Web, too. Like, she’s only my sensei, right?
And she runs the hub. Lots of photos from lots of people there.
Anyone else out there? Who am I missing?
Who’s going to be IMing me with…
WHY DON’T YOU LOVE ME ANY MORE???????
(Oh, baby, I still love you. I’m just bad about this stuff. Now gimme some sugar!)
I love it when folks catch moments I miss.
Or seeing the performance from their perspective.
Their preferences. Their angles.
Their settings.
I like to shoot in Midday while others actually listen to you guys and change to Midnight.
Seeing a performance literally through their eyes.
And the history.
Who used to be in which group.
And how they broke out and made it on their own.
Post their gallery SLURLs, Flickr sites, and other locations in the comments.
It’ll be fun. Like going through old photo albums.
With your grandma and grampa.
Back during the war. And the rationing.
That was your great aunt. She got hit by a bus when she was eleven.
You have her eyes. But you look both ways before you cross the street.
She didn’t.
See how fun this is?

Today's questions:

  • Other than my firehose on Flickr, where do you turn to for dance performance images and vids?
  • How do you use the photographs?
  • Ever gotten an idea for a performance from a photograph?
Fly that freak flag in the comments, baby!

Let's Dance at Whymsee Noir

****Saturday 9/2/17 Let's Dance at Whymsee Noir: Newness! 6 pm SLT****

Join us on Saturday, 9/2/17, starting at 6 pm, for Let's Dance at Whymsee Noir: NEWNESS. I have choreographed 12 new songs, and we've decked ourselves out in the latest fashion...for our NEWBIE avatars when we joined SL years ago! Send me a photo of you when you were a newbie, and I will put it in a slideshow! It should be a fun celebration of our newbie selves, we can't do it without you!

For the Let's Dance show, we trade in our sets for MORE dancing and LESS wait time between songs! There will be lots of wiggling, dancing, physics, and a little dazzle thrown in for good measure! Dance along with us or have a seat in our comfy chairs, we like it when you watch! Come to the show and see what all the fuss is about!

What a wicked game we play… to make me feel this way…

A lot of y’all out there have introduction music for your group.
Let’s call it an anthem.
It gets the audience in the mood for the performance.
Time to put on your WAR FACE!

Trying the LeLutka Bianca Bento mesh head...
I said WAR FACE, not whore face, dammit.
And it also gives the performers a few extra minutes to deal with crashes, unrezzed costumes, and other Second Life shit.
Then, in between acts, there’s often a performer’s warm-up music.
It lets you know who’s coming next.
(If you don’t peek behind the curtain, or look at the day’s lineup.)
It lets you know that you’re about to be… (dramatic pause) THUNDERSTRUCK!
Or the song mentions their name, like, eleventy billion times.
CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE!
See?
CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE!
See what I mean?
CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE! CHEWIE!
Okay, knock it the fuck off right now!
Jeez!
Or, the song fills you with a sense of dread… oh my God, they’re up tonight? (SHOTS FIRED!)
So you can get another beer, or take a quick bathroom break.
Maybe both?
(I hide my vodka in the tank. I need help.)

I’ve been thinking about what tune I’d use as an introduction.
Not that I’ll ever perform, but what if… you know.
Kind of like playing “Fuck, Marry, Kill” with a list of Hollywood actors.
You never will, but…
No. Just no. (Call me, Scarlett!)
Anyway, I thought about it for a while and came up with a list.
Whatsername by Green Day, because I burned all the photographs.
Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon, because… Warren.
Or maybe his I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead. That works, too.
Late Night Evening Prostitute by Tom Waits, because… Tom. Just Tom.
(And I’m a fucking attention whore, living in denial.)
Everybody’s My Friend by Kansas, but everybody isn’t. So, forget that.
Storms by Fleetwood Mac is way too long.
Stop Forwarding That Crap To Me by Weird Al is too.
Build The Robots by Doctor Steel?
And so on… we could play this game… this wicked game for hours.
The point is, you’ll never hear this shit or see me perform. Deal with it.
I firmly believe in the principles of Gonzo, but Plimpton went too far with the football shit.
And Hunter… man, you do not want to get me started on that dude.
Just because I'm appropriating the title of his greatest work, I'm not going to floss my teeth with a Magnum any time soon, eh. (Football Season is not over yet!)

The questions I’m asking today are:

  • What is your group’s anthem, and why did y’all select it? What does it mean to you?
  • What is your performer intro music, and why did you select it?
  • Is there other music related to you or your group that you’d like to talk about?

Lay it on me, folks. The comments are open.

We can't stop here...

It's not over yet...
Hi there.
I’m R. Crap Mariner.
(The R. stands for Robot. Read your Asimov.)
You may have seen me at a dance performance or two.
I shoot pictures. I shoot a lot of pictures.
Way too many pictures.
Now that Verizon owns Flickr, I’m sure they’ll eventually apply their rate-plan definition of “unlimited” to Flickr Pro.
(Or just kill it, like Yahoo did with Cloud Party.)

Sometimes, I write things.
Strange things.
A lot of them are about a pirate named George.
(He’s not a very good pirate.)
I used to blog about Second Life stuff.
I used to blog about a lot of things.
But I don’t anymore.
I think that’s a relief to a lot of people.
(Especially me.)

I tweet now and then.
Sometimes as me. And sometimes as someone else.
(They wear a bag over their head.)
I don’t Plurk, though. Blech.

They asked me if I wanted to blog for Dance Queens.
My initial response was “... no?”
I’m not a performer.
I’m not a choreographer. Or a director.
I’m not a costumer or set designer.
I’m not a hostess or a bouncer or a deejay.
I’m not a member of any dance troupe’s performance group.
And, most days, I’m a lousy tipper, too.
(Although, to be honest, y’all are like the musicians. The same 100L keeps getting passed back and forth, right?)

So, why blog for Dance Queens?
What the hell am I doing here?
What the hell are you doing here?
I’m not sure.
Let’s figure out why together, okay?
I’ll have some questions and thoughts about dance stuff for y’all.
Maybe even reach out in IMs now and then, if that’s okay.
Tell me what the hell is missing in your life in the comments.
I can’t solve everything, but maybe someone else can.
Who the hell knows?
Because, we can’t stop here… THIS IS BAT COUNTRY!

(More to come…)

Fear and Loathing!

A new editorial column from R.Crap Mariner is about to hit right here on Dance Queens. Crap will bring you her opinion about all things dance. Interactive, sometimes humorous, truthful and always opinionated, she will discuss her views on dance related material. Please remember everyone is entitled to their opinion, agree or disagree but let's try to remember its an editorial! Fun!
