Short Honeymoon and Making the Cut

Well just when I thought it was safe....

...drama...not all of it with my mama.

And...more trends...faster and furious-er.

*****So the dance-love-dam is showing sings of leaking...first crack.

Dancer contention has been and I fear will become more and more overshadowed by producer-contention.

And dancers, dancer-talent, and choreo-talent is now becoming scarce and noticeable. There is a fevered pitch to be the best, led by type-A' overseers who bring with them, tried and true real-life experiences,  successes, and methodologies that qualify them as being 'capable to lead and succeed'. The short-term fix is social engineering....networking...leading to sharing of resources...inviting other troupes to perform...performing elsewhere...cross-promoting....feel-good festival-ing.

However behind the scenes...producers are shuffling, reshuffling, maneuvering, manipulating, recruiting, staffing,  and other creative chicanery, prestidigitation, skulduggery, and legerdemain to keep their names among the top of the top. The top spot is very coveted and there is some serious competition for the spot once held by 1 or 2 venues.

Producers could and often did treat their auburn-headed offspring with disdain, contempt, and outright discourteous-y. "Where you gonna go, lil one walk out that door and you'll never work in this town again". Yes that was once the the oft-heard theatrical-threat. Only a few games in town. So you kissed as you were, bowed your head or curtsied and mumbled "Yes ma'am and no ma'am". Look away, look away look away.

Not the case anymore.  A hint of unfairness or disrespect and the able-bodied are off for greener-pastures in a heartbeat where they  are welcomed with open arms and legwarmers.

The best as the once-revered badge of sold-out-performances is now a shared commodity in several venues. 60, 70, 85, 101 persons in attendance. Some producers known to scorn and frown if they get less than 80 filled seats.

Child's play now. So how to distinguish the great from the best NOW?? Pre-sold ticket sales? Length of time you can make people wait in line? Total donations? Glowing reviews? Size of your staff?

Well first I must send kudos to those who paved the way...those bold enough to have created this phenomena out of the ether. True inspiration and creativity. We owe them a debt of gratitude. It offers so many people great opportunities to maximize the creative potential of SL. SOMETHING TO DO in this, some might say God-forsaken playland. YAY for stuff to do! Amen and Awomen.

What could be next? Salaried performers from the cream of the crop? I don't count it out. An unofficial star-rating system? I don't count it out.

Who will turn out the villains? Who will reign supreme as heroes?

After great SUPER-shows, the real SUPER-drama MAY be about to unfold...if so, then keep your head down as brown stuff is about to hit the air-conditioner.

****
And on a lighter note, more trends.

1) more humor injected into routines

2) adding to the list of on-board specialists  are: in-house special-fx specialist
that probably will include particles, lighting, and other feats of magic.

3) open rehearsals

4) the process of creation, itself, as a new form of entertainment
We are seeing that head peek out as we witness Kat's testament of how several performers interpret the same piece of music.

5) higher caliber debuts

6) more story, more story, more story

****************
Making the Cut

Another trend I've noticed recently among the bigger venues is an established 'service-level agreement' among the performers as troupe-sizes grow. There are only so many slots available in a 1 hr show. Not all the 25 performers in trhe roster have time to do 5 minute solos. If zero time between acts, thats a 2hr++ show minimum. Of course there will be chances to do group acts.
But, long-story, short....decisions have to be made on who will perform and who won't. Should venues offer a 2nd weekly show or an additional bi-weekly slot to give more performers a chance to shine?

Making the cut is a new phenomena. It used to mean, either you did or didn't perform. The best acts got to go on. Now its escalated to, not only will you not perform but you may get cut from the troupe all-together, if you show continual sub-par performances. What level of excellence should be expected? What level of consistency should there be? Should it be the producer, the audience, the performer? Is there value in providing room for performers to grow? Are the audience less-critical than performers are of their own routines?

So on both ends of the spectrum, there is less toleration for being 'unhappy'. Producers now letting people go, dancers up and leaving if their talent fails to get the proper respect they feel it is due.

I used to assume producers were right. The people they let go would rid off into the sunset.

On the contrary.

They have go on to blossom like never before. Shock me! Is it a case of 'everything happens for a reason' ?.  Maybe not unlike Bill Gates dropping out of Harvard. A win for the grander picture?

Some producers argue, a silver lining when performers up and leave in that people leaving creates an opportunity for a new person to hire on and bring their friends, thus expanding the audience base. Hmmm? If that be the case, can we expect scheduled firings for the sole purpose of expanding the audience base?

Sighs.

Blue Moon Dark Carnival V

For the 5th year running, Naiki's alt, Reala, has rebelled against him and made an attempt at a hostile take-over of Moons with the help of her carnival of monsters, demons, and Derek the squid. This year however she had help. The treacherous SathCat offered his assistance (mostly because he was bored of Nai's bad jokes).  This year, Reala has won.

As Moons enters its 4th week of Dark Carnival occupation, Reala has turned the Mooners into monsters and is forcing them to do a carnival cabaret, with Nai telling Reala's jokes.

Can the Mooners recover and beat back Naiki's alt? Can SathCat find the cat kibble she lost down the back of the sofa? And will Beff get a job in the Japanese porn industry after her legs were turned to tentacles?

These questions and more are not going to be answered at the cabaret, 2:30pm SLT, this Saturday at the Blue Moon.

Critical Mass

So much is happening so fast all over. So many thoughts in my mind and subjects to talk about. So I tried to find one topic that is an umbrella on many of my thoughts.

It feels like the SL Performance-Dance community has reached critical mass.

"the minimum size or amount of something required to start or maintain a venture."

I define that as a 'point' where the sheer volume and excitement level of activity is so weighty, that the weightiness itself has an affect on a spurt in its growth and appeal.

One thing that is happening is fast-paced trending. A new idea is quick to find mass acceptance as venues quickly react to try and stay on an even keel with each other.

In just very recent times we've seen:

1) a resurgence of the emote, condensed, pertinent, and repackaged
2) the offering of in-venue mentor programs to reach out and help the new
3) readdressing the sensual side of burlesque with a new uninhibited bravado
4) a sharp increase in the demand for male-dancers, maybe due to the introduction of mirrored dances
5) increase in the inclusion of single-to-couple transitioning

6) sold out performances
7) acceptance of arriving early and waiting. I think its because we tend to spend a lot of SL time 'standing around doing nothing' anyways. So why not stand-around with purpose and intent?
8) acceptance of the increased complexity of show-productions
9) acceptance of the importance of the role tools play as a part of performing
10) innovating problem-solving

11) increase in the smart use of particles...(I expect to see this trend continue)
12) standardizing of methods-of-operations - people are learning and agreeing on steps to always take i.e. caching methodologies, ways to handle crashing, scheduling of large troupe-sizes, rehearsals, and performer juggling
13) simultaneous multiple group dancing
14) advances in handling lag; i.e. use of double-sims, de-rendering the audience, pre-caching; forced seating; suggesting viewer setttings; lowered-graphic settings.
15) a marked decrease in the wait-time between acts.

16) increased emphasis on audience immersion
17) increased complexity of group-dance choreography
18) on-staff specialists. Following along the lines of RL productions, many venues now have their own specialists: costume-makers; production designers; scripters; set builders. I expect to see sometime in the future; writers; directors (for camera views); actors
19) There is an excitement of 'becoming involved' because there is contagion in the joining in with the excitement of others. Its uplifting to be around people who are already uplifted and excited and joyous about what they are doing.
20) increased level of multitasking multiple performances across multiple venues
21) an increase in overlooking past squabbles, working side-by-side with past adversaries, casting swords aside, all in the name of the greater-love-of-the-dance which is swelling to un-reached summits. Yes i see it, been between it, heard in one ear and out the other, been part of it.

I am not sure if people are performing less at their home venues because they are doing more performances at other venues to increase exposure and routine-reuse? But its good for the audience who wouldn't normally go to a different venue. They are able to see acts that, maybe due to day-and-time, they could not attend.

Seems people are much busier than in the olden days. I know i have had a sudden marked increase in involvement with other people and with other venues after being in the basement for the last 4 years.
Oh the sun...its hurting my eyes.

And for sure I've noticed the community getting smaller in that I keep running into the same people and more often. And I feel a true sense of more community spirit and love...old barriers of unfamiliarity are crumbling as we put our LOVE OF DANCE before past and present squabbles. A lot of forgiving an kissing and making-up going on ..because...this love...well it just feels so good.

So a word to the new...if you have issues with someone...you had best plan on you working with them in the not-too-distant future because its the way relationships are redeveloping in the name of the greater good...that being the art and love-of-the-dance. Our world is shrinking and love is growing and our love-of-the-dance and desire to create and share our creations is taking over in a good way.

Return of the Emote?

Emoting is the basis of RP. And RP is the foundation of the sensual side of SL. Many a towel has been soiled and added to the clothes hamper after just one use... from the result of carefully, soulfully, constructed verbiage in the heat of many moments. There is much to be said for the power of words when carefully used.

Emoting had become so verbose and insincere, for me, that I had grown to dislike it as part of 'shows'. It was a distraction from the main performance. No value-added.

But I have recently done an about face.  I was witness to some emoting during a show. No I wasn't awestruck but there was a small crack in my hard exterior for its promised potential. Not sure why I got this feeling but a fellow attendee also remarked with the same feeling and vibe.

I think it was because, so little was going on on stage that I found myself actually wanting an explanation of what I was seeing without fearing that I would miss something on stage. That's a clever ruse to sell an emote. Don't put the emote up against something visually demanding. Create a 'pocket' for them. Maybe slow down whats going on. I saw that done boldly. Little to no motion or pressing stage theatrics. Just a pose or AO. A moment. Perfect for delivering timely words.

 And then it hit me.

We are on our way to perfecting the "story thru dance", not to be confused with dramatic productions and musicals. I think its the next major step as we write our own 'history of dance' 'our way'.

I sensed, detected, sniffed, that its the next 'new'. This time for keeps? Yes its been tried and abandoned before. But I sense a slow swelling of interest. A few venues still chip away at it, some with success with their own take on it.

But my gut says its here to stay. But this time with a conscious and a purpose as an important cog in the wheel of performance-backed-story.

It seems an unspoken rule that emotes should never exceed more than 1 line across the screen. The shorter the better. I should talk, right? Infamous for novellas passed off as blogs. Yeah I know. Heed my own words. Do as I say not as I do.

But I am qualified to speak as an audience member...as I qualify as  "professional audience" if nothing else.

And as an try-to-be-astute 'watcher'...I suggest that emotes NOT describe anything we can assess for ourselves from watching and listening. They should be used as an addition, perhaps to introduce and bridge story segments, not unlike a narrator's narration.

Fill in what cant be shown like, what the person might be 'thinking' or 'feeling'. Or perhaps what transpired prior to what we are seeing. Since the primary medium is digital, feel free to use free-association of words and by-pass standard sentence structure in the name of 'terseness'.  Just nouns and verbs or even just one or the other. Words can be hints or clues to meaning that we can figure out and fill in missing descriptives. But don't make it too abstruse.

Avoid adjectives and adverbs. Let us create those in our own heads from what we are seeing and hearing.

=================
Just some guidelines that i think would work as I really do like the 'return of the written word' as a key component to advance the story-telling aspect of solo and group show-dance.

I even like the idea of words on a board as that fades in and out or raises and lowers.

And as a side-note, I've noticed quite a few venues returning to the sensual side of burlesque. I hope this is a sign of things to come and not just a cyclical blip. Seductive dance is an art form unto itself, with boundless opportunities for experimentation, creativity, and honing to perfection.

Also-Rans and the Dawn of the Mentor Program

also-ran
"neither a loser nor a winner, inescapably more pathetic, less evocative of empathy, less romantic than winner or loser."
Yep that's me...and a few others. I'm all about talking the walk. We talk about 'the dance game'. We critique it.  See lots of shows so we do support it. Network in it. Go to all the classes and festivals. But we seem to find reasons NOT to participate...usually we reach in and pull out and play the "RL" card. For me its fear of failure or meeting up to the stupid standards I've set for myself (in my own delirious mind).

We will help out groups short of performers. Sit on pose-ball, etc....but putting an act together takes cahunas. We fall short, repeatedly, but we have good intentions that that big day will come some day. We're coming. hold on. /me sings "Hold on, I'm comin..." /me sings "Somewhere, over the rainbow".  /me sings "Any day now"

Well great-ideas are planted in the firmament above where we all draw on them like a wiki and thus many of us can appear to come up with the same great new idea at the same time; not unlike how animals on different lands separated by water, learn new tricks at the same time; like monkeys/apes on different continents learning to crush coconuts with rocks.

And alas we welcome the dawning of the 'mentoring program'. It goes by a few names around the dance community. Suffice it to say its meant to help support and train dance-show-newbies with every element of putting on a show who normally would be too shy or too ill-equipped skill-wise to take that first step on their own. A great idea to get new blood and a new strain of blood into the dance folds. Seems there is about 90-day boot-camp. Wonder if it because an SL study shows that the average relationship in SL lasts 90 days? So if you are in a relationship, it provides enough time for you to shake your demanding partner who doesn't want to share you with something else you really love.

So much more goes into putting on a show than just a year ago...especially 2 years ago. Better dances, better choreography, mesh costumes, new sophisticated tools, classes, more and better use of custom particles,  multiple sets, large group numbers, complex group exchanges, more use of humor, waaaaaaay better sets, use of stage mechanicals, special fx, live MCing, use of dramatic music, big production story-telling, festivals, venue-swapping, not to mention the added intimidation of packed-houses reaching up to 101 avatars on the sim to see one show.

I've no idea if I would be intimidated today if i was just coming into this new past-time as opposed to when I came into it years ago when I did.

They say, imagine everyone in the audience is naked. Hmmm not sure how that works or if it works. What if an audience was forced to be naked? Would a newbie feel less angst? I would love to see that tried as a social, psychological experiment. What better place than SL to try it? If nothing else, I bet you get a packed house. Make your own jokes.
