Ahhh, it’s springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. There is such a temptation to lie back in a perfume-laden spring breeze, close our eyes, and simply wonder . . . just wonder, just let our fantasies run wild.
Maybe we would wonder about a Candy Mountain—not the movie, though that would be nice—but the dream of a better place, a magical place, maybe a place of talking, singing, and dancing animals!
If a Candy Mountain is in your dream, the Spirit Light Dance Company (SLDC) wants to share it with you through three performances on June 7th, 8th & 14th. The title of the performance is, simply, “Candy Mountain,” and is inspired by a quaint song many of us played as children about bees, birds, bubblegum trees, and rivers of lemon aid. The original lyrics of the song describe the utopian musings of the quintessential “hobo,” and his dream world of sunshine, free spirits, no hardships, and the companionship of the animals.
If you want animals, SLDC’s Candy Mountain is the place to be. A Queen Bee and a Pink Panther weave together fourteen scenes that feature bees, birds, bears, gorillas, gators and moonshine, skunks, panthers, wolves, llamas, porcupines, and deer spirits. They dance, they frolic, they laugh . . . and most important of all, you will want to dance, frolic, and laugh. A happy hobo guides you on a whimsical tour of Candy Mountain.
SLDC is a Second-Life dance company that brings together the artistic potential of virtual-world technology and the full range of choreographic styles. All dances are live and driven in real time by the performers. The SLDC is a company comprised solely of volunteers, including the choreographers, the set designers, the back-office personnel and, of course, the dancers.
Come join us, June 7th, 8th & 14th, the Rockcliffe University Theater, 12:00 noon. Leave your disbelief at the door and embrace the fantasies of Candy Mountain dreams. Who knows? Maybe Candy Mountain is a real place? Shall we ask Burl Ives? See you there!
