A Special Star Ceremony for Some Extra Special People

It was such a privilege to be able to honor some extra special people this week at Dance Queens!  This was to honor Those Who Give, some of the dedicated people who give their time and efforts to help keep the dance community informed and help dancers when they can.  We thank them for their service to the dance community, they have more than earned their stars in the Dance Queens Walk of Fame.  Please find the ceremony notes below and then read their interviews to learn a bit more about these gorgeous people!

THE CEREMONY

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are here today for a very special Walk of Fame paver placing.  Today, we honor Those Who Serve.  These are very special people who generously give life's most precious commodity to the dance community: Time.  These people have given countless hours, day after week after month after year, helping people in Second Life's dance community in numerous ways.

They manage the Dance Queens group, which is the hub for all things dance-related in our virtual world.  They contribute to the blog, calendar, Info Center, assisting people that call out for help in group chat, and keeping the group informed as to upcoming events.  These people keep Dance Queens alive, functioning and productive.  And they do not get paid for their service.  They are, at times, even abused by some people.  But they are bonded with one another in service to this essential group.

Dance Queens is the go-to for people needing to communicate across the grid about dance-related issues, and Those Who Serve are the people who make that possible.  We thank you for your service and for caring about Dance Queens and the dance community... our extended dance family.  These STARS in the Dance Queens Walk of Fame will now be placed.  Also, you will receive a STAR to hang on the wall in your home or at your home venue.

We also acknowledge with gratitude Dutchess Button, who gave us a home when our sim was taken from us with no warning, when the person we rented the sim from left Second Life and abandoned his sims.  Thank you Dutchess for looking after us and helping us to have a stable home!

We appreciate your hard work, skills and dedication.  IT IS NOTICED!  We see you.  We thank you for your contributions to virtual dance in Second Life and wish you many years of dance fulfilment.  We also hope that all you sow in giving will come back to you as a harvest of appreciation from those who benefit from your loving work.

Thank you so much everyone for coming out to this most special and important Dance Queens Walk of Fame ceremony!  We hope you appreciate the passion and service of these dedicated people, leaders in our dance community.  Thank you, Those Who Serve... our Dance Queen Leaders... for serving and helping to keep the dance community informed!  Congratulations!  Wishing you all appreciation and fulfillment!

THE INTERVIEWS

Beebs Carfield

1. How and when did you find Second Life?

Way back in 2008 I ventured onto Second Life. Me and a bunch of friends from another virtual world came over and decided to check this one out.

2. How and when did you discover virtual dance?

My now husband Pan had been coming to dance shows and brought me along to one. I was hooked ever since!

3. Please tell us your history of serving the dance community.  When did you start, how did you come to do it, and what are your current service activities?

It all started with going to shows, then Jilley asking me if I could sit in a chair, and she put me in one of her dances. It then went to back up dancing, and filling in for hosting! I host at several theaters, Moonshadow, TerpsiCorps, Noir, and Laughing Hearts. I also backup dance at all these theaters as well as Kinetics!  I was drafted to start helping at Dance Queens by Webby a few years ago.

4.  What do you most enjoy about serving the dance community?

I love all the creativity and personalities of the members of the dance community.

5. What do you least enjoy about serving the dance community?

Drama, but that's true in all aspects of life.

6. What advice would you give to someone who would like to promote the dance community?

I'd tell people to just come and stay for an hour and be amazed by the talent and creativity of the choreographers.

7. What is your favorite food, favorite drink, and please tell us about any pets that you have.

My favorite food is Mexican/tacos.. and I'm addicted to zero sugar Wild Cherry Pepsi!  I have one furbaby, a black male cat named Ezra!

9. What activities other than dance do you enjoy?

SHOPPING!

DIVALIN MAGIC

1. How and when did you find Second Life?

I was poking around the internet looking for chat channels.  I like to think SL stuck out its foot and tripped me so I'd find it!  But this isn't my first avatar - THAT avatar was created in 2006.  And she still has her plastic hair!

2. How and when did you discover virtual dance?

My history with creative SL dance didn’t start here. I found an alternative to SL (the now defunct InWorldz), and it was there that I was introduced to the genre. I was hooked. When I came back to SL, I actively searched for dance shows. It wasn’t long before the urge to choreograph and to learn all the tools of the trade hit me, and I haven’t looked back since.

3. Please tell us your history of serving the dance community. When did you start, how did you come to do it, and what are your current service activities?

I’ve been involved in the dance community for quite some time, but my role as a manager at Dance Queens truly solidified my commitment. I started out as someone who simply enjoyed dancing and gradually found myself wanting to help more.

4. What do you most enjoy about serving the dance community?

What I enjoy most is the energy and creativity that the dance community brings together. Seeing someone grow from their first tentative steps to commanding a stage is incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to be part of a community that’s so supportive and vibrant.

5. What do you least enjoy about serving the dance community?

The least enjoyable part is trying to remember to get the DQ notices out when it's my turn!! It's possible I may have forgotten a time or two. 0.o

6. What advice would you give to someone who would like to promote the dance community?

My advice is to be passionate and consistent. Promoting the dance community isn’t just about putting on events; it’s about nurturing relationships, and most importantly, it’s about people first.

7. If you have your own dance troupe, please tell a little bit about it, and its history.

I am a very proud founding member of Kinetics Dance.  I had never imagined that, together with the other founders and managers, building a troupe was even possible.  But we did it, and it's exciting and scary all at the same time.

8. What is your favorite food, favorite drink, and please tell us about any pets that you have.

I have cats - I'm on the edge of crazy cat lady!  And the bevvy would be wine of course, red wine. I'm pretty flexible about all types of cuisine - but I draw the line at liver.  Blech.

9. What activities other than dance do you enjoy?

My main activity in SL, outside of dance, is chatting with people.  I'm terrible in crowds, but love to chat one-to-one. Even better if it's a voice chat over a cup of good coffee.

10. Is there anything else you'd like to add?

SL is my little slice of home-away-from-home, a place where I can unwind, connect, and be creative in ways that real life doesn’t always allow. Over the years, I’ve met some of the most talented, kind-hearted, and inspiring people here. The friendships and collaborations we build feel just as real as anything outside of SL. It’s a special community where we get to express ourselves, share our passions, and create something bigger together. For that, I’m truly grateful.

DUTCHESS BUTTON

1. How and when did you find Second Life?

*** I heard of second life in February of 2008.

2. How and when did you discover virtual dance?

*** I started dancing as a cheerleader and moved to a dance troupe in 2018.

 3. Please tell us your history of serving the dance community.  When did you start, how did you come to do it, and what are your current service activities?

I danced as a cheerleader and created routines for half time shows with Spot on group formation in mumbles about 10 years ago.  Then was recruited and taught how to do choreographed dances at Dance Xcetera from 2018.  I left this group almost three years, and danced for a few months under Adori Resident at her club for L'Envie.

In addition, I was the exclusive choreographer for AIM modeling agency and you may contact Essy Luv. In this capacity, I did various routines both dancing and also walked the models per their request.  On average the routine consisted of approximately 12-18 models.  The song was usually provided by the owner and was given freedom to interpret the song. On average I did 5-8 routines a year, including Earth day, Mr. Virtual man, AIM Annual Halloween shows and designer premiers such as Clef de Peau.

I've presented routines for Noir Neverland Cabaret, Erotique Burlesque and The Empire Room.

In addition I have performed in Lighting the way while being in various groups, such as the Titan cheerleaders, Dance Xcetera, and MADDS.  Under Adori's direction we did Dance Queens challenge in 2021, where she built the routine and I built the stage.

4.  What do you most enjoy about serving the dance community?

I have enjoyed being anonymously helping others.

5. What advice would you give to someone who would like to promote the dance community?

To be kind to others that don't know of our community.  Invite them to a performance or two and tell them there is nothing like it in the grid.

 6. What is your favorite food, favorite drink, and please tell us about any pets that you have.

I love Mediterranean and French food, alas I love a good whiskey and white sangria, and I have two devils that pass themselves off as Pomeranian dogs.

 7. What activities other than dance do you enjoy?

I enjoy taking pictures and lately I've been teaching myself to do videos of dance routines.

We thank these selfless people for giving their time and resources to keeping Dance Queens productive and functional.  Thank you for holding us together!  Congratulations on earning your stars in the Dance Queens Walk of Fame.  We wish you much joy and fulfilment in your future time with Dance Queens!  With love and appreciation for all you give and all you do!

THE INTERVIEWS

ANYA

1. How and when did you find Second Life?

In December of 2008, my real life sister introduced me to SL.  She was playing for a few months and one day called me on the phone and said "hey sis you have to check out this place". Both of us were really clueless about all SL had to offer at the time (her more so than me - next sentence. lol), we only saw it as a real life Barbie dress up game and were all about fashion. Unfortunately, she isn't part of SL anymore, decided to leave around 2010.  I should of taken her leave, but got too addicted. :)

My first experience in SL landed me at help island and I was there for two weeks because my sister didn't know how I was suppose to leave (hence, her more so than me, lol).   I wish that I had known about the modelling and dance world at that time, but I did learn how to sit on a piano and play.  Which this lady showed up at help island and started showing me things.  Then she said that you know that you can leave this place right? lol.  Anyway, I landed at a club called Midnight Reflections and stayed there until they closed, I hardly left that place until they closed down.  After that I started venturing out into SL, I owned a racing track, which is still around today (I am not on that avatar anymore, and not associated the sim, so I will keep it unnamed)..

2. How and when did you discover virtual dance?

I was introduced to dance during a visit to see performance at Noir Neverland - August 2020.

 3. I know picking is hard, but name a few of your favorite dances that you have ever created:

Cell Block Tango, Don Jealous Me, Taki Taki, Where They From (WTF), Already and Away...others and I know that I named more than a few.. :)

Walk of Fame - Cell Block Tango, Don Jealous Me, Where They From (WTF), and Away From Here

 4.  Did you have any mentors when you were learning to dance that you'd like to wave to?

Sweetlips55 Resident - she was my first mentor and started me off from ground zero.

BabypeaVonPhoenix Bikergrrl - attended her Dance Boot Camp

Mavrick Nightfire - watched as he created and was shown several concepts such as, formations, special effects, texturing, set building, and more.

Epic Dance School Instructors (Jana Christos, MinaAncio, Falbala Fairey, and Royal Shippe) - challenged me and helped me improve my mover formations and set builds.

 5. What is your favorite thing about virtual dance creation?

Shopping for the perfect outfit for the routine.

6. What is your least favorite thing about virtual dance creation?

Searching for the perfect dance animation(s) to fit the song.

 7. What advice would you give to someone who is new to virtual dance?

Don't be afraid to ask for help.

8. What is your favorite food, favorite drink, and please tell us about any pets that you have.

I don't have a specific favorite food, however chicken is my go to; favorite drink - Ice Tea; and pet - a 13 month old Maltipoo - Jaxson

 9. What activities other than dance do you enjoy?

Since learning dance, I spend most of my time at my sim, most times I have squirrel moments and I am listening to music to figure out my next routine.

PEA

1. How and when did you find Second Life?

A friend in a chat group posted about it.  I was thrilled by the idea of becoming a mermaid and wanted to live as one, so I joined in 2008.  I came with my RL best friend Cath, who is now also my housemate in RL.  I could not wait to buy a sim and make it into a mermaid world, but I got bit by a vampire neighbour and joined Bloodlines instead.  Never did fully become a mermaid, but life under the sea is definitely for me.  I belong in the water.

2. How and when did you discover virtual dance?

After two years as a vampire, I got bored of it.  One of my minions was in Gor and invited me there to be his fighting slave.  So it was in Gor that I met Gunner.  I had a gag avatar that was sold to him as a joke on May 10th 2011.  She was very fat, flat chested, flat butt, bald and wore silks.  She had perfect kajira manners.  I was sold to him sight-unseen by a friend.  When I logged in this gag alt of mine and went to the Gorean HUB, I expected this Master to run screaming.  Instead, he took me home and collared me.  The only thing he asked me to change was to get hair.  I was blown away!  He didn't care if I stayed fat, didn't care if I had a totally flat chest.  I knew this man was different.  So I stayed with him, so curious about him.  Turns out, I found him to be a most fascinating person.  I enjoyed talking to him.  We talked for hours every day.  He loved Gorean dance so I made a dance for him.  This was in January 2012.  I did Gorean dance competitions and exhibitions for close to a year.  Almost year after we met, Gunner relocated from Texas to Australia in April of 2012.  We got married three months after that on July 8th and have now been married for 12 years.  He inspired me to dance in Gor.  After a while, I wanted to do more with dance than Gor allowed.  I wanted to dance to a variety of music, build sets, wear costumes.  I found Dance Queens and from there, found troupes in mainstream dance.

 3. I know picking is hard, but name a few of your favorite dances that you have ever created:

This is "To Build a Home," a dance I made for Webby.  I can no longer do it, it is too painful.  I used to doubt life after death, was starting to doubt God, but some very specific and impossible things happened after she flew away that can only serve as proof of life after death and of an entity I call God.  I know there is definitely life after death.  It is real.

4.  Did you have any mentors when you were learning to dance that you'd like to wave to?

Lady C and Diawa.  They taught me a lot and helped me.

 5. What is your favorite thing about virtual dance creation?

I love the music.  Picking a song, doing the choreography.  And the entire creation process.  We can go anywhere we want, every dance creation is a journey.  Creating it is the fun part.  I love building sets.

 6. What is your least favorite thing about virtual dance creation?

I detest shopping in both lives and so I detest shopping for costumes.  I wish I had a personal shopper who would do it for me.  If I could afford it, I'd pay someone to shop for costumes for me.  I don't like waiting for MP pages to load, sorting through all those items to find one thing or worse, after all that unable to find what I want.  Having to demo 20 items, finding one that does not break... a huge waste of precious time.  And going to shops physically I really detest.  Waiting for everything to load... so boring!  I can't stand it.  And I really detest poorly rigged clothing that breaks.

 7. What advice would you give to someone who is new to virtual dance?

Do not compare your work to that of others.  Comparing yourself to someone else is an act of violence against yourself.  It is an attack on everything that makes you YOU.  When we create a dance and perform it, we are sharing a peek inside our souls.  Don't contaminate this gift by comparing it to the souls of others.  Love your soul, be gentle with yourself, and love your dances... they are each a road in the journey of your dance experience.  If you see someone doing something you admire, learn to do it.  Watch others with admiration, take joy in their sharing, and make your dances so that you feel fulfilled with them. Remember, people who compare and feel they must grade dancers as who is the best, those people are missing something major in their real lives and are trying to compensate for it in SL.  Don't be like that.  Have gratitude in your RL and let dance be your way to share with others in SL, don't use it as a weapon to try to lord over others or hurt them, but rather as a gift of sharing the soul.

8. If you have your own dance troupe, please tell a little bit about it, and its history.

Paul, Gunner and I own Elysium Cabaret since December of 2012.  We started it because I wanted a place to dance at with few rules.  I don't like limitations.  We do a show every Friday at 6pm SLT and then a matinee the last Saturday of each month at 1pm SLT.  Our venue is The Empire Room on Copperhead Road sim.

 9. What is your favorite food, favorite drink, and please tell us about any pets that you have.

I love Chinese fried rice, mixed, with lots of veges and mixed meats in it.  And I LOVE MSG!  I am addicted to Pepsi Max and coffee.  I have two cats, Diva and Trouble, and two dogs... Whippets... Gracie and Boomer.

10. What activities other than dance do you enjoy?

There are activities other than dance?  I used to be a pirate.  I do like roleplay.  I used to race giant snails and do roller derby.  I LOVE zombies and play video games, Fallout 4, Dying Light and Subnautica.  I watch a lot of educational films and videos.

 11. Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I love life and love Dance Queens.  I love people and like seeing them happy and having fun.  Be good to one another.  Be kind.  Share your toys.  Don't keep your light under a barrel... a candle loses no light from lighting another candle.

THE CEREMONY

Congratulations to Anya and Pea!  Our Walk of Fame continues to grow.  We hope it will remain for a very long time, certainly as long as we have the Dance Queens sim.  Thank you for participating with this project.  Thank you for sharing your imaginative creations with all of Second Life... gifts from your soul.  We wish you many years of dance fulfilment and look forward to what gifts you will create to share as time goes by.

She performed a mini-show that dazzled and amazed the audience on the Zhaza Zerbino stage at the Dance Queens sim. Her creativity and imagination took us all on an eclectic journey to other worlds, dimensions and lives, each telling a unique story. Let's have a look at some pictures from the show, and then read an interview with this talented virtual dance creator and get to know her better!

THE INTERVIEW

1. How and when did you find Second Life?
I found SL back in January 2008 through a friend of mine. She introduced a whole group of us, however with each year that’s gone by they’ve all left SL, so now only I remain.

 2. How and when did you discover virtual dance?
In March 2020, I began my journey in Austin. There, I went to one of the dance troupe shows and discovered it was an Austin activity.  I reached out and joined Austin in Motion in the early summer.  After dancing in my first show, I started wondering about becoming a choreographer so I started working on my first dance in November/December 2020 and made my choreographer’s debut with Austin In Motion in January 2021 and haven’t looked back since.

3. I know picking is hard, but name a few of your favorite dances that you have ever created:
Each dance I have created is a favourite for one reason or another.  What I can say, the 4 dances you are seeing here today are probably my outstanding ones from each of the 4 years I’ve been a choreographer.

“I Will Never Die” is the first solo I created in March 2021. It was the first time I used the Spot On Glow Fader en-masse with staggered timings in line with the song's lyrics.

“Supermassive Black Hole” is a dance I had a lot of fun creating in September 2022.  Originally, this dance had a cast of 10.  A gang of Stormtroopers march through the audience up to the stage while the Imperial March fills the theatre.  It was the first time I used not just the stage, but the entire theatre to tell a story.

“Devil Devil” is a favourite of mine as it’s the one where I was thrilled with how each transition and effect fell into place with the music.  Originally created in October 2023, it is also a dance which expresses my love of all things dark, and dangerous, particularly the devil.

Lastly, in August 2024, I created “Glitter & Gold”.  The vision for this dance was for a group of golden statues to come to life. Through the lyrics, I take the audience on a journey across time and humanity’s strive to be successful.  After all, ‘All that glitters is gold.’

However, since I chose these 4 dances, I have created several new ones.  Most notable are “Hold On” by Alexia Evellyn, “Uprising” by Muse, and “A Storm is Coming” by Liv Ash & Tommee Proffitt.

4.  Did you have any mentors when you were learning to dance that you'd like to wave to?
I certainly do!  One of my greatest mentors is my ‘sis’ Azdra!  She has inspired, encouraged, and helped me all along the way.  It was Azdra who included me in my very first dance at Austin and the rest is history.

Other notable mentors for me include BabyPea Von Phoenix, Taema Mynx, & SoCo Trallis.  Each of these ladies create such awesome dances which make me take notice which then pushes me to try what some might think is impossible with my own creations.

 5. What is your favorite thing about virtual dance creation?
My favourite thing about virtual dance creation is there is no limit to one’s imagination when it comes to a piece of music.  We each have a story to tell when it comes to dance, and my vision for one song will be entirely different to another’s vision for the same song.

6. What is your least favorite thing about virtual dance creation?
My least favourite thing about virtual dance is some of the limitations of what I’d like to do during a dance.  I come up with some rather wild ideas, usually while driving to & from work and listening to music in the car.  I’ll hear a song, and the ideas for the dance start flooding in.  When I sit down to start building the set, or trying to locate the right effects (particles, lighting, etc) or even the right costumes, many times I get frustrated because something doesn’t exist or takes forever to locate.  After all, I’m not a builder or a script writer.

 7. What advice would you give to someone who is new to virtual dance?
Let’s see…..there is no such word as ‘can’t’.  Trust yourself and your vision. If you can imagine it, then you can create it.

 8. What is your favorite food, favorite drink, and please tell us about any pets that you have.
Well…..those who know me here in SL can tell you I’m always banging on about my favourite drink, which is a not so ‘wee’ dram of single malt scotch.  Favourite food is pizza!  Vegetarian Hot.  Margharita, Spinach & Ricotta, or Tuna & Sweetcorn.

As for pets, I’m the proud ‘mama’ of a diva dog named Aoife (a pure white Miniature Schnauzer), an attention whore named Bartley, and a drunken porn-star named Winston.  Bartley & Winston are both long-haired Birman cats.  And of course, I can’t forget to mention my little kitty angel, Hamish who crossed the rainbow bridge in February 2024.

9. What activities other than dance do you enjoy?
Well in SL, there is always the shopping!  But when faces with RL, I can always be found with a book/Kindle in my hands.  When not reading, I enjoy writing, photography, genealogical research and last by not least, learning different languages.  So far, I’ve been mastering Italian, Scots Gaelic, and Latin.
