Ah, such a special time of year! In the Northern Hemisphere, we are enjoying the last perfumed whiffs of spring flowers. In the Southern Hemisphere, we are waiting for the last leaves to drop from the trees. In the tropics, well, just more of the same. Whatever your time of year, it is always the season for the Spirit Light Dance Company (SLDC).
Mark on your calendars June 2nd and 9th! SLDC is presenting the latest performance of its Showcase series. This series is special! It offers members of the company the opportunity to express their own dance artistry—to choreograph and to direct their own piece. Some members will perform their first creation, white knuckles and all. Older members may be looking for new creative ventures. Regardless whether they are a dance “newbies” or “old pros,” choreography in an electronic world is not for the faint of heart, especially when creating the flow and sense of wonder that are hallmarks of SLDC productions. Challenges include the choreography itself, getting sets on stage, costume design, music selection, and of course rehearsal time. And here is what makes us smile with pride: everybody is a volunteer doing what they do for the love of dance!
The production will showcase a variety of music and themes from the 1960’s to the present. So the dances will go from pop music, to Broadway, to Latin, to Rock, to just feeling good. Oh yes, and you will want to stay for the finale that brings home the various themes in a rousing tribute to “Rhythm Nation.”
But don’t take my word for any of this. Join us on Sundays, June 2nd and 9th, at noon SLT in the Theater of Light at Rockcliffe University. Seating is limited, so come early. What better way to bring in the changing seasons than to enjoy an invigorating and toe-tapping experience as the masters of the electronic dance genre “showcase” their choreographic artistry. See you there.
