If you have read the article on Freestyle Choreography, you already have the concept of using a Transition Dance and a Waiting Dance (or Sequence). A Waiting Dance is simply a dance or animated pose that shows you are still moving but not dancing. It's used between songs in a club or any time you want.

If you want to stand out in a club, switching to a waiting dance or sequence between songs will make you stand out. It mirrors RL where, when the music stops, you stop dancing.

Most advanced dancers have a means of using a Transition Dance (like Sultry Down Body) at the end of the song, followed by the Waiting Dance (like rythm6). Putting these two types of dances in your HUD gives you easy access to them by clicking on the Transition Dance followed by the Waiting Dance.

Here is a picture from one of the pages on my current main HUD. On every page I have my Transition Dance (Sultry Down Body) at the top of the page. I arrange this using note cards and this is my main note card. Sultry Down Body is a 2.0 second non-looped dance that I have found is good for going from one dance to another when the dances don't match so well. I also use it at the end of songs.

At the bottom of almost every page of my main note card I also have the Waiting Dance (rythm6).

You do not have to put the Waiting Dance in your HUD. If you want to use it outside your HUD, you can. This is where animation priorities become important. My Transition Dance and Waiting Dance are both priority 4. I determined this by opening the Developer Menu (ctrl+alt+Q) and selecting Avatar, then Animation Information. This places above my head (and all the avatars near you), the animations that are active with the priority. When you start a new animation, you can see it added to the list with its priority.

So, knowing that almost all of my regular dances are priority 4 or lower, I can at any time use my Transition Dance and my Waiting Dance outside my HUD.

I can open the Waiting Dance from inventory to give the small window named Animation:rythm6 (or Animation: name of your dance). Then, when I click on Play Inworld, my Waiting Dance, rythm6, plays. You are actually still dancing the dance from your HUD, but the waiting dance has taken priority since it was the last dance activated and is equal to or higher than your HUD dance. If you are dancing a sequence from your HUD, when the next dance in the sequence begins, you will stop the Waiting Dance, and return to your sequence.

This idea of how to use animation priorities also applies to couples dancing whether you use the TIS Hybrid or INTAN. Most couples dances are one animation for the male and one for the female that just loops. You can override the couples animation with your Waiting Dance. One idea is to put you and your partner on your HUD, then when the music stops, you can click on your Waiting Dance. A few couples dances are multiple animations for the female and male. In this case, just like with sequences, when the next animation in the sequence starts you will again dance.

You can even use the external Waiting Dance when you are on someone else's HUD.

So, there you have it. When the music stops ... Stop Dancing.

Would be also nice if u could write that we offer all common couple dances here.. we now also do solos and pole dances

After this conversation I corrected the DMC entry in the Dance Makers list. Once I talk to Dave Bellman about who first introduced MOCAP to SL, I will correct that also. I think I will leave the Bits and Bobs dances in the MOCAP listing since they generally are so well made and popular.

I want to share a little secret with you to help make things easier. Not many know this, so i decided to let u all know..

HOW TO MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR INVENTORY TO PREVENT INVENTORY LOSS:

How it works:
============
When you first log into the test grid (or after a password change) a fresh copy of your inventory will be transferred to the test grid.

If you ever loose inventory, LL can restore items from the test grid to the main grid.

Instructions:
===========
- On the login screen press CTRL + SHIFT + G and u will see a grid selection.
- Choose 'Aditi' (test grid) and log on there.
If you log in first time (or after you changed your password) a fresh copy of your inventory will be fetched from the main grid (you will see it in the progress bar when you log on). Do this regulary (once a month or so?) to always have a backup of your items.
- Log out
- On the login screen select 'Agni' (main grid) and log into the regular SL.
- If you loose inventory open a ticket and request that the object will be restored from the test grid. Let them know the *exact* name and the folder structure it is in.

I have not tried this yet. I IM'd with DM and asked if "no copy" items were also backed up and he said yes. I think this is a very significant note since it can prevent the loss of a HUD. If you have hundreds or thousands of dances in your HUD, this is something you should do often

I have been spending way too much time scouring SL Marketplace. I have found three items there that you possibly could find useful ... maybe ... if you are lonely, own an empty club or need a special prop in a show. These are dancing bots of various forms.

The first are called "Dancing Ghosts" and are part of a series of dancing creatures made by Alisa Ultsch.

You can also dance with the male ghost, although it's a very stiff dance.

Next, is a robot belly dancer with lousy dance moves and no discipline. She moves around and is a bit jumpy. Also, she looks to have a terminal case of cellulite. But, if you need a few extra belly dancers, this may help.

Last is Dancing Jelly Beans. You get six of them in the pack. You look cute when you hop on, for example, here are Riddle and I in Jelly Beans. Unfortunately, although the dance in it is synced, it is not too good.

Since the Dancing Jelly Beans are modify and copy, you can remove a jelly bean and turn it into a cute costume and dance with your HUD.

We are continuing on the process I described earlier to analyze the Category 4 dance HUDs:

1. Start with the Category 4 Dance HUDs. When we finish with the Category 4, we will move to the Category 3 Dance HUDs, if there is a need.

2. Ask each of the Category 4 Dance HUD makers to comment on how their HUD compares against the criteria we have established for comparing HUDs.

3. Ask volunteer DANCE QUEENS members to confirm and complete how each Dance HUD compares with the criteria. The names of the volunteers will be kept confidential.

4. Publish the preliminary results without making a recommendation and ask DANCE QUEENS members to comment.

5. Modify the results based on the comments.

6. Make final recommendations.

I reported on Step 2 last month. Since then six DANCE QUEENS members have volunteered to analyze (Step3) the Category 4 HUDs. We are about half way through the analysis. Here is the note that got the volunteer group started

THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR WORK

The first thing to say is how important this work is. There are a lot of Dance HUDs in SL (http://sldancequeens.blogspot.com/2011/11/comparing-dance-huds-categories.html). As you know, dancing in SL is a lot of fun, but also is quite technical as you get better and better. HUDs cost a lot of money and selecting the right HUD is an important decision for dancers. When we identify the best HUDs, we are going to affect the decisions of many dancers.

Making a Dance HUD requires a lot of programming and skill. The most advanced require probably hundreds of hours of programming work. When we select HUDs we are making some HUD makers winners and some losers in terms of work and income. Although our work will improve the HUDs, we have to be prepared for some unhappy HUD makers.

When you volunteered, I said your identity would be kept confidential. I do not want you to feel pressure from any HUD maker or DANCE QUEENS member. This way you can be freer to make the tough decisions we will make. I thought about keeping your identities separate from each other, but concluded that we will have to discuss the HUDs at some point and need to know each other. SO, PLEASE KEEP THE NAMES OF THIS GROUP CONFIDENTIAL. I know you all and trust that this will happen.

HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES

I think all of you are familiar with the Huddles EZ Animator Deluxe. This gives us a HUD which we all understand and it can serve as the standard for comparing other HUDs. If you are unfamiliar with the Huddles, let me know.

My idea for proceeding with the analysis is to assign each person HUDs to analyze. There are a total of nine HUDs in Category 4. Excluding the Huddles that is eight. I feel for the first pass that two people should analyze each HUD. I want two opinions on the first pass so that we get a broader view and people can work together if they choose. That means each of us will analyze two or three HUDs.

Each of you has identied the HUDs you have. I have assigned the HUDs to analyze to fit what you have. Some HUDs no one has and I have also assigned these. I WILL PAY FOR THE PURCHASE OF THE HUDs YOU DO NOT HAVE. Just tell me how much.

DOING THE ANALYSIS

We have already identified criteria for analyzing the HUDs. I don't want us to get lost in the detail of the analysis, rather I want us to keep a focus on each HUD relative to the Huddles Standard. There are eleven broad criteria that have been identified:

In the sample I have listed the eleven criteria and placed a number from 2 to -2 under each HUD for each criteria. The Huddles is always a 0. If a HUD is better than the Huddles in a criteria put a 1. If it is exceptionally better, put a 2. If it is worse, put a -1. If it is really terrible or not useful because of a major deficiency, put a -2. The SAMPLE is not real data. It is only to show you the comparative result we will create.

If you use a number other than 0 for any criteria, we need a SHORT explanation why.
Before we get started I want to give you a chance to comment on the approach. If there are no major changes suggested, we can start on Friday of this week. I will send to you all the questions I receive and the ideas for improving our analytical approach. I think it will take a couple of weeks for us to do this first pass.

Once we have the first set of data, we probably will want the whole group to look at the best candidates to make a final decision of what we recommend.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Most of the questions that you asked were administrative questions or financial. There were two questions that were a little more significant.

The first involved how to deal with HUDs that performed couples dancing in addition to the capabilities of a Category 4 HUD. For this analysis consider that managing couples dances is an added feature under options, so we will add section XI. C. MANAGES COUPLES DANCING. Perhaps at a later time we will define a Category 5 for HUDs that manage couples dances.

The second question concerned documentation of HUDs that would be considered difficult. The difficulties are sufficient to cause possible misunderstanding and may be due to being incomplete or poorly written. We will add a section X. E. INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO UNDERSTAND

SENDING ME YOUR INPUT

When you send me your input, please place it on a note card. Identify the title of the note card with the HUD name and your name. The contents of the note card should list the eleven categories with a number assigned to each category. If you assign a 0 to a category, you do not need to add any text. If you assign any number other than 0, you need to say why. Remember the scoring is relative to the Huddles. In some case you will not be able to score. Use an NA (Not Applicable) for these cases.

Once we have the initial analysis done, the entire volunteer group will discuss the best two or three HUDs so we get the opinion of all. Following that discussion I will send each HUD maker the analysis for his/her HUD only to allow for comments. When we receive the comments, the volunteers will review the comments. If more analysis is required, we will do it. If not, we will publish the results to get comments from DANCE QUEENS members (Step 4).

I am hoping to complete the analysis by March.

Conjoined Dancing

I have been in SL over five years and it's hard to be surprised by things any more. Yesterday, I came across something that did surprise me ... Conjoined Dancing.

I don't know whether to laugh or throw up, but it does exist as something called the "Conjoiner.". Let me show you what it looks like with my RL best friend who is in SL as none other than Nottooo Wise (we call her 3ooo).

There are quite a few poses and four dances included with the Conjoiner. The dances are freebie dances, but you can add your own.

I think the way that it works is to use a high priority animation that puts the hips of the two avatars at the same position, but separates the upper half. You can remove the animations inside and see that they are quite specialized also to remove one arm. The scripting to make it work looks pretty good though I suppose I could figure out how to recreate it with two HUDs, but I think I won't.

There is also a third pose ball you can activate to have a partner for the conjoined.

You can get it at SL Marketplace or in-world at TwiztedFlesh for 1000 L.

It appears that neither Sine Wave nor Linden seems to care about the intellectual property represented by these dances. I have sent notes to Easy Babcock and other Sine Wave representatives five times. I have filed abuse reports four times with Linden Lab. I believe the only way that copyrights are enforced is when the owner files a report with Linden. This protects the owner of the intellectual property, but does not protect the customers of the stores where illegal dances are sold. When Sine Wave finally decides to complain to Linden, the customers get replacement dances and no money back. Plus, it messes up your dance HUD if you have replacement dances in it. This is an unfortunate situation for us, the customers, so I continue to recommend that you avoid these stores.

I have sent this report to the major MOCAP dance makers and have again filed an abuse report. DANCE QUEENS members who buy dances at these locations eventually will lose their dances and their money. I do not believe that LL should permit this.

1. Another vendor, MiChiGaNs ShAcK MAIN SUPERSTORE! is selling pirated Sine Wave pole dances. For example, take a look at the pole dance Catapiller and compare it to Sine Wave's pole 26;22.9. As usual, I recommend that you buy nothing from this store.

2. This location called Dance Animations is still selling pirated Sine Wave dances and has added more. For example, compare Dance0009 in the 298L vendor and Sine Wave's crimson breeze. I recommend that you not shop here.

3. This store, GCD Club Equipment, is still selling pirated Sine Wave and Henmations dances. For example, compare Dance 19 with Henmations f_dance_20. Avoid it.

4. C&G Animations - Although most of the illegal dances have been removed, there are still some here. This guy is very creative. Take a look at STREET 11 then compare it to Ministry of Motion's Catepillar Limbo. It seems he has taken parts of Catepillar Limbo and included parts of another dance. As before, avoid this place.

1. Dance Animations - This location is selling pirated Sine Wave dances for 198L or less. As you know LL will remove these dances from your inventory and HUD even if you have paid for them once they determine that the dances are illegal. I recommend that you not shop here. Thanks to Diawa Bellic for finding it.

2. GCD Club Equipment - This is a section of a store that sells musical instruments. In the back is a set of dance machines and dance balls. Last week I looked at the dances. They seem to match Sine Wave dances and some may also match Henmations dances. There is a lot of stuff in the GCD stores, but I recommend that you buy nothing here.

3. C&G Animations - Most, but not all, of the stolen dances here have been removed. I have heard that the owner, Brow Abrahams, has been suspended from SL for seven days. I recommend that you buy nothing here.

Yesterday, I learned about what appears what appears to be a copyright infringement by C&G Animations, which is owned by Brow Abrahams (􀂓). I went to see and found a brand new MOCAP dance site. Since I own all of the MyAnimations Sensual dance series, I looked at the Sensual series made by C&G. Sensual 01 by C&G is identical to My-SENSUAL-46. Since My-SENSUAL-46 has a creation date much earlier than that of SENSUAL 01, I agree that SENSUAL 01 is a copy of My-SENSUAL-46. I then checked SENSUAL 02 and found it is a copy of My-SENSUAL-35.

Although I had heard that dances from Akeyo, Henmations and Studio4D had also been copied. I did not confirm this. There are a lot of dances at C&G. I recommend that DANCE QUEENS members NOT purchase dances at C&G. Eventually, Linden Lab will remove illegal dances even if you have paid for them.

I am copying this note to Ramona Criss (MyAnimations), artoo Magneto (AKEYO), Hendrik Schroeder (Henmations), Live Gears (Studio4D) and to Brow Abrahams (C&G). If I learn in the next day that the dances are legal, I will alert you. If it continues to appear that the dances are illegal copies, I will file an abuse report. Although I leave it to the dance creators to protect their intellectual property, I do not want DANCE QUEENS members paying for dances that they will lose.

Some of you may have received an email from Linden Lab recently about illegal dances (Intellectual Property Notice about Second Life Content). It stated that if you had certain dances, they were illegal copies and had been replaced by a simple animation. My note identified six dances:

When I checked my inventory and my HUD, all the dances were there and were correct. In a group IM exchange I learned that others had the same experience. All of us had legal dances purchased from the creators and they had not been replaced.

I am aware of two sets of illegal dances. One is a copy of several Akeyo dances (but not the one mentioned) and one is a copy of about 20 Sine Wave dances. The illegal Akeyo dances were exchanged some time ago. I had both sets and had contacted the creators about them.

First, if your dances have not been affected, I recommend no action.

Second, if you have illegal dances, I recommend that you delete them. Illegal dances reduce the income for the dance makers. If they stop making dances, we have no fun. I would not only delete them but report to Linden Lab anyone who gives you illegal dances.

A burlesque musical show in Moulin Rouge style that will remind you that, at this time, there wasn't only strip tease, but a Revue composed of "comiques troupiers", singers, "caf'conc" singers, with chorus girls dancing between sketches.
These shows, widely more later, consecrated the golden age of "Femmes Fatales' and beautiful creatures that we could admire at the Folies Bergères in 1868, then at the Moulin Rouge, which became the Reine Blanche 20 years later, with its famous Jardin de Paris.
This is the origin of the Music Hall but also the Star System, the cradle of Broadway and Hollywood shaped by all available skills coming from the other side of the Atlantic with the sublime Mister Ziegfeld and his Folies from 1907.
Moulin Rouge's dancers were worldwide famous for being invitors of the French Cancan dance, a kind of gallop where legs are throwed in the air, showing, by this way, some very appreciated anatomical secrets !
Let's go and look for this lost time, go back to the early days of the French Cancan ...

Choreography is an important part of dancing and done so many different ways. I want to have a way for DANCE QUEENS members to show their choreography skills and at the same time let other members see the details behind the dance.

Saturday, 25 February at 2 pm SLT we will have the DANCE QUEENS Choreography Show II. It will be a show to highlight couples dancing. Here is how it will work.

This is a show for couples dancing (two people). It will not be for individuals or groups. The two people can dance together any way they want.

All dances will be on the DANCE QUEENS building area of Dance Central at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Not2z/32/224/501. There are four stage areas. Each dance couple will be assigned a stage area. the schedule will be set to move chronologically through the stages (1 then 2 then 3 then 4 then 1 ...).

Each dance couple will be given a 10-minute time slot. Prior to this time you must set-up. Once you have given your dance, you will need to remove anything you rez so the next group using the stage area can set up. This should give at least 20 minutes for the next couple to set up.

You can rezz anything you want for your performance as long as it fits within the interior of the stage area.

The music that you want during your 10 minutes must be identified beforehand. Riddlebox Ribble will run the stream and work with you to get the music.

Because this is both a demo and a learning event, you need to provide me (Nottoo) your Dance List (Freestyle) or Sequence (Sequenced) so that it can be put in the program distributed to the audience. This way they can watch you dance and see how you did it.

Many of you are already customers of Rag Dollz already some i hope will learn about our new Sim and Shops. We have just moved to Rag Dollz Island and are planning an event for the weekend of February 4th and 5th.

We are hoping some of your groups would like to perform that weekend . We welcome all types of dancers as long as you do not dance nude. Dancing at this event will expose your group to new opportunities in because we have over 8500 members.

A Simple, Sexy Modifying Anim 120126

I was having some fun playing with modifying animations, which are animations that change how another dance or animation looks. I've talked about this before in terms of dance priorities, the joints of your avatar and how to make simple animations using Qavimator or BVHacker. But today I wasn't too concerned about the how to, I just wanted to have fun.

Two days ago, I was classifying more couples dances with Psyche Lunasea and we began to talk about the cultural aspects of dancing. We both agreed that dancing is very cultural and one of the nice things about SL is that we can explore a wide range of different dancing styles. So, I had on my mind how dancing expresses feelings.

In my culture dancing is very sexual and sensual. That got me thinking about how I could modify existing dances to make them different and maybe even sexier. So I thought about what type of body language conveys added sensuality ... well, hands behind the head. I Googled "hands behind the head" and didn't find much to support my feeling that this adds to the sensuality, but that didn't stop me. Hey, my guess is that most guys like to see breasts in a clearer view.

Anyway, this led to me creating a really simple modifying animation in Qavimator. It's not high quality, but it works. You can get it in the Modifying Animations inside the DANCE QUEENS Free Stuff Box in Dance Central. I call it "hands behind head."

If you click on it, you will see it only moves the hands to behind the head and leaves them there. Its a not too exciting non-looped move when used alone. BUT, start a nice dance that you like, then start "hands behind head" and WOW. HAHAHAHA. The dance looks very different.

"hands behind head" has only the shoulder, arms and forearms set as priority 4. All other joints are essentially a priority 0. Most dances are priority 4, so as long as you are using a second HUD or just activating the dance outside your normal HUD, and starting your dance first, it works. If you dance sequences, when the next dance in the sequence starts, the modifying anim appears to stop. Really the modifying anim is running in the background and is not visible until you stop your regular dance. Play with it a bit and you will see how to use it. Again:

1. Start a dance with your main HUD
2. Start "hands behind head" with second HUD or just by itself, but not in your main HUD

The modifying anim also works with stands. Stands are usually priority 3 so the modifying anim stays visible when you switch to a different stand.

About Leko Littlebird and the Workshop

Leko Littlebird is one of those strange Second Life characters that does in SL exactly what he does in RL. In both worlds he works in dance and theatre as a scenic designer and as a stage photographer of some notoriety. While astonished by the raw creativity on display every day in Second Life by those who design for dance and theatre events, he wanted to share some of the traditions and techniques employed by real-life theatre artists that would be of great value to those designing or producing in Second Life. Second Life and Real Life need not be so far apart. Each can inform and inspire the other.

As a fun bonus, Mr. Littlebird will begin his presentation by sharing images of RL dance companies he has worked with whose dance is typified by some of the magical elements one might think are only available to SL dancers (like flight)!

This workshop is suitable for both beginners and those more advanced as designers or builders in SL or those just interested in dance and theatre production in SL.

As the owner of the blog I get access to Google Analytics, which is a tool for analyzing websites. Do not worry, I cannot see individual people on the blog and cannot identify what you are looking at individually. The data is summary data only, but it is kind of interesting.

Let me share with you last week's data (15 - 21 January 2012), which is fairly typical week of blog activity. Here is some summary data:

This means that 275 different people visited the blog during the week. In total the 275 people came 474 times. That means that some people are returning during the week. The 275 people looked at 1190 pages during the week. WOW, I like that. This all means that many people in the SL dance community are using the blog and view it as a source of information on a continuing basis.

There are about 335 members in DANCE QUEENS now and about 75 have not logged on in some time. Although non-SL and non-DANCE QUEENS people find the blog, most of the traffic seems to be people in DANCE QUEENS. This makes me feel good that it is useful for you.

Although some of the data looks strange (like 0 time on the blog), it does tell a lot. About half of the 474 visits come from the USA. Another 25% come from Japan. English-speaking countries are the next three largest. I am surprised by the geographical diversity of the people who look at the blog. My own visits are not counted since I can turn off the counter for myself. I visit the blog a lot in creating the content.

People find the blog in one of three ways:

1. Directly entering a URL in their browser - For example, if you have DANCE QUEENS set as a favorite, this is a direct entry.

2. Search - If you use a search engine like Google or Bing and find DANCE QUEENS in this way, this is a search entry

3. Referral - If there is a link on another site that takes you to DANCE QUEENS, this is a referral.

Back in 2007 when I started dancing in SL, I used to go to a club called Toby's Juke Joint Blues. About once a week a guy named Disco Fride would come in and play the guitar to the radio music. He would hop on the little stage and play away. After seeing this a couple of times, one night I hopped on the stage with him and danced to the music he played. We had a great time with him playing and me dancing and did it weekly after that.

In 2008 Riddle and I formed our own club called Not Too Hot. We used to invite both DJs and live performers to play on the small stage. One of the innovations we made was to put dancers with some of the live performers. MadMax Huet, who still performs in SL, agreed for us to put dancers with him while he played. We called the group the Maxines. I had my own line of clothing at the time and the Maxines dressed in one of the outfits. Here are Max and the Maxines in their first show.

You may recognize Dance Queens members Iliandra Allen, Cilla Teebrook and Leela Forder.

This was great fun too. I wish I had recorded Max that day. The show was half rocking blues and half laughing. The Maxines were a hit.

One day I decided to buy my own guitar. I shopped around and chose to get one from Ministry of Motion (MoM), because MoM had the only MOCAP guitar moves in SL. The MoM guitars are copy which means that you can remove the animations from it without damaging the use of the guitar. Of course, I did this and put the anims in my dance HUD.

This was also so much fun. I would wear my red and black rocker hair, a wild outfit and go to clubs and play and dance. Sometimes, I would play super guitar riffs to the recorded music and sometimes I would dance away. Nothing like doing break dancing with a guitar.

I learned that I could use two HUDs when dancing with the guitar. One was my main HUD with all of my dances and dance sequences. The other was either the guitar HUD from MoM or a second dance HUD with the guitar anims. It takes a little practice to use two HUDs this way, but you quickly learn to make very smooth transitions from dancing to guitar playing to dancing. Since most of the dances I use are priority 4 dances and the guitar anims are also priority 4 (see here for an explanation of priorities), switching from dancing with the guitar to playing the guitar is easily done by dancing using my main HUD and clicking the guitar anim on the second HUD. Both animations are affecting your avatar but the last one started is the one that takes priority. Further, I learned that, after I switched from dancing with the main HUD to guitar playing with the second HUD, I could click the stop button once on the first HUD and it would stop only the dance that was still active although I could not see it. The guitar anim on the second HUD did not stop unless I clicked the stop button twice. That made it possible for me to use waiting anims (stands) that are usually priority 3 in either HUD. WOW, soon I was a guitar dancing star.

A couple of weeks ago I bought the Dancer's Violin by Voodoo on SL Marketplace. This is a violin and it takes dancing and musical instruments one step further. This violin gives you the options to play the violin, not play the violin (ready position) or dance a dance and play the violin. You even have a limited capability to add your own dances. WOW! This is a great use of what I call modifying animations (see here for info on modifying animations) that affect only one part of your avatar while leaving the rest unaffected. This violin lets you dance your dance while playing. In essence you are using two anims at once: the dance and the modifying anim.

I searched around for other musical instruments that have anims that show you playing. I looked at guitars, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, clarinets, maracas and tambourines. I didn't find any more instrument playing anims that are made to control only part of the avatar.

You can make simple modifying anims with Qavimator or BVHacker that control just a few parts of your avatar, if you want to make your own. I am hoping that perhaps some of the MOCAP dance makers will think about making modifying anims for musical instruments and open up this area more for us to use.

If you are a beginning dancer, the many different options for dancing in SL can be confusing. This note is intended to help you understand what the different dance equipment is and how it works.

Animations

All movement in SL is done with animations. Animations are special files (.bvh files) that are uploaded into SL. Animations include all dances, actions (such as shouting, standing, landing) and static poses. The maximum length of an animation is 30 seconds. The equipment used for dancing in SL is what is used to control the animations in terms of when the animation is played, how long it is played, where the avatar is located and how the avatar may interact with other avatars and objects. In Dance Queens we have divided animations into four TYPES:

Dances
Animated Poses
Static Poses
Couples Dances

There are tens of thousands of animations in SL. In dancing we rarely use the animated poses and static poses that are used for cuddles or sex, but when we do they usually fall into the Animated Poses or Static Poses TYPES.

Dances are further divided in two ways. The first has to do with the method used to create the dance animation: MOCAP (MOtion CAPture) or non-MOCAP.The second has to do with the CATEGORY of the Dance. You can see the CATEGORIES and further separation into STYLES in the Dance Database section of the blog.

Individual Dancing

Many of us in DANCE QUEENS had our first experience with dancing in a club by clicking on a Dance Ball, which is an object usually above the floor in a club in which you click and select dances that make you move. Your first experience was probably quite exciting as you looked great dancing to the song that played in the club. A Dance Ball is an object that contains individual Dance Animations and scripts for activating the dances usually displayed with a blue menu. If you go to popular clubs, you will still see noobs asking "How do I dance?"

Couples Dancing

It doesn't take long in most clubs to see another form of dancing called Couples Dancing. In this form two people dance together in sync (synchronized). This looks a lot like RL (Real Life) dancing. Couples dancing is done by one of four methods. The most common is to rezz pose balls using either the TIS Hybrid System or the the INTAN System. These systems are explained and compared here. The older system is to use static pose balls in red (or pink) and blue on which the couple sits to dance. The third system is to use Dance HUDs (explained below) to control each dancer. The fourth is to use a couples dancing HUD (explained below).

Dance HUDs

Many of us learned to dance using Dance Balls for individual and couples dancing. I remember my first time seeing two people dancing together the same animation in sync. How cool. This led to learning about Dance HUDs (Heads Up Display). Dance HUDs are objects that you purchase (or get for free) that allow you to control your own dancing. You have to put dances into the HUD, then wear the HUD and you can select the dance you want to dance. One of the great things about Dance HUDs is you can dance almost anywhere and you can buy the dances you like the best. Dance HUDs also allow you to control the dancing of others by inviting them to join you. This lets you dance the same dance in sync.

There are a lot of Dance HUDs in SL and we have placed them into four categories of increasing capability.

With Dance HUDs most people learn about Freestyle and Sequenced Choreography so they can really look good when dancing.

Some Dance HUDs are designed to let you control couples dancing also.

Dance Show Equipment

Once people become really proficient at dancing using a HUD, often they decide to join a Dance group. If you join a Dance Group, this is when you realize that putting on super Dance Shows requires more than just running a Dance HUD. Dance Shows often feature multiple dancers moving around a stage at precise times. Rezzing of scenery and props also may be important. This is where additional control equipment comes in. The DB Dance System, DanceMaster, XPOSE and MPC System all offer some degree of control of dancer positions and dance timing. Often Dance Show designers use Dance HUDs and one or more of the control equipment. Dance Balls, INTANs and TIS Hybrid systems are rarely used in Dance Shows.

In the past month Psyche Lunasea and I have spent quite a few hours together dancing all of the Couples Dances that we could find in SL. We used the listing of couples dances found on the INTAN website. I thought I had the largest collection of couples dances in SL at about 165, but Psyche has more than I do. We danced all of hers, then went to the stores of the ones neither she nor I had. We found almost all of the dances.

We classified the dances using the DANCE QUEENS Classification System, which identifies CATEGORIES (such as HipHop and Performance), then subdivides the CATEGORIES into STYLES. We found the classification system was pretty good and added just a few STYLES that were not listed. We made extensive use of the videos to help us see the Dance STYLES in RL.

Both of us found this exercise to be challenging and fun. It's not easy to classify dances, but we did it.

Here is the list of Couples Dances.

Please take a look at it. If you can fill in any of the blanks, send me the information. Just as importantly, if you think a dance is wrongly classified, let me know. We used the column named 'Characteristic' to put the name of the Couples Dance since the individual animation names had to be separated into male and female.

(NOTE: There are a few lines in the spreadsheet where the animation name has two or three entries. This is a conversion problem that I haven't solved in going from the Access database to the Google spreadsheet. I think you can figure out the entries while I try to solve this annoying problem.)

One of the nice things about SL is that you can have fun dancing in silly ways. Here is one way to do it. Get the DANCE QUEENS - Bounce Square from the Free Stuff Box at Dance Central. Once you have it, here is how you use it.

1. Be sure you are at a place where you can rezz objects.

2. Start dancing with your HUD. Try something like swoon.

3. Rezz the DANCE QUEENS - Bounce Square at your feet. Be sure to avoid wearing it.

HAHAHAHAHA.

It's good for dancing with your friends too.

If you get dizzy, just change your camera focus so you can dance and bounce. Pretty silly ... but fun.

We have classified cheerleading as a dance STYLE in the Performance CATEGORY. In real life you may see cheerleaders dancing many different STYLES of dance along with acrobatic moves. In SL you can do the same.

There are some stores that sell cheerleading animations and equipment. I haven't seen any MOCAP cheerleader moves. I did a search for cheerleading anims and found the following stores that sell them:

AnimAngels Quality Poses and Animations - Some non-MOCAP cheerleader poses and outfits are found here. There are also some other animated poses and static animations, but the quality is not too good.
Moon Works - This small store has some nice animated poses, ballet dances, cheerleader dances and fighting anims, . Unfortunately, some of the dances start off center point.
Second Life Cheerleading Network & The Bimbo Cheerleaders - This place has a few poorly made cheerleader animations.
SPIRIT - for everything cheerleading and dance! - Yes, the name says it ... cherleading stuff is here. The anims are very stiff but there are not many cheerleading anims in SL, so, if you are hard up, get them here. Also there are some ballet poses.

A few years ago we used to play a game in SL called Riddleball. It was sort of a simplified soccerr (Football) game with two teams. We had a lot of fun playing and spiced the game up with cheerleaders dancing especially during halftime. Riddle made cheerleader outfits in red, blue, pink and green for this and I have put them in the DANCE QUEENS Free Stuff box in Dance Central. In addition to the cheerleader outfits there are some very nice pom-poms that are color changeable..

The second step was to ask Category 4 Dance HUD Makers to comment on their HUD relative to the criteria for analyzing the HUDs. Of the nine Category 4 HUD makers, three responded in detail and their responses are included below. Two said that they would like to respond but could not do so within the time allotted. I will add their responses when they send them. Four did not respond.

I wanted to give you some insight in to Barre. Please keep in mind Barre is not just a dance HUD. It is also a platform for entertainers. It's architecture was developed to be fast and allow for add-on features. Barre gives developers the tools to create the features they want without having to develop a complete HUD.

I hope the information i provided below will help in your HUD analysis. Please note this information is about the current version 3.

CRITERIA FOR ANALYZING DANCE HUDs
NAME OF HUD: Barre Dance HUD V3

I. CAPACITY
A. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF DANCES IN HUD - UNLIMITED
For a script to manipulate content in a HUD it has to use LSL functions. One of the functions used is llGetInventoryNumber(i). This function returns an integer and we know the maximum limit of an integer is 2,147,483,647. Anything beyond that would cause an error. So in theory your limit is *Giggles* 2,147,483,647.
I also suggest to you that you don’t put that many animations in a HUD. It would just be foolish and I don’t think that a SIM or SL would like you if you did. Chances are your HUD would go bye bye in the vast SL unknown. Just sayin...
B. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF DANCERS TO LEAD - 94
Additional dance slots are added using the automated HUD ToolBox. This keeps scripts counts low when not needed.
In theory... The dance slot count is held in an integer with a max of 2,147,483,647. Realistically... The most tested was 70 dance slots with 67 active dancers and 3 dance slots open for more dancers. EVERY HUD is limited by the ability for SL scripts to respond to events. The LSL event cache limit is 60 before things/events start falling off the end (this is a SL limitation). Any event based dance HUD that says it can do more then that is unrealistic if it uses a SYNC event. So the realistic cap would be around 65 to 70 +- for any SYNC event based HUD effectively. This is why at a point, no matter how many times you hit the sync button it will never sync all dancers perfect on any HUD (keep in mind viewer range limitations apply here as well as SIM lag).
C. MAXIMUM SIZE OF A NOTE CARD -UNLIMITED
STORAGE...
50000 characters are stored from a note card in to a single database. Barre is designed to have the ability to add additional databases. You can add over 70 databases to your HUD using the ToolBox. This would give you a total of better then 70 note cards that can be loaded. So if you have 196 macro sequences on a note card that use 255 characters per line you can store over 13720 sequences globally. If you have simple dances with timings you can have on average about 400 per note card and with 70 databases you can store around 28000. Keep in mind these are SL local. You don't have to wait for them to download from someones server or have to worry about them going bye bye when that HUD maker closes shop.

II. NAVIGATION
A. DANCES VISIBLE AT ONE TIME - ALL
10 dances or sequences are displayed on the HUD at one time.
B. NUMBER OF CLICKS TO START ANY DANCE OR SEQUENCE - 1
Barre had a Quick Scroll bar this enables you to jump through your lists. What used to take 50 clicks on Huddles can be done in 1 or 2 on Barre.
C. DANCE NAMES - SHOWS ENTIRE NAME
Full names are displayed.

III. ORGANIZATION
A. ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEMS - UNLIMITED
Organization is done via note cards. Each database that is loaded with a note card takes on the name of the note card. This way you can sort slow sequences onto a note card titled 'Slow Dances'. Then when you are looking for just slow dances you simply click the database to instantly load 400 slow dances or sequences.
B. EASE OF USE - INTUITIVELY SIMPLE
Simply put most users find the transition from Huddles to Barre easier that any other HUD on the market.

IV. SIZE AND APPEARANCE
A. SIZE ON SCREEN WHEN DANCING - INVISIBLE
Barre has 2 size options, large, the default size and small. Barre uses LSL text in the same way that Huddles does.
B. SIZE ON SCREEN WHEN CLICKING - EASY TO CLICK WITHOUT ERRORS
Barre uses mid sized buttons to make fast clicking possible without clicking the wrong button.
C. COLOR AND TEXTURE MODIFIABLE - YES
Barre uses textures and text colors to change its appearance. We have scripts for designers so that they can create and sell skins for Barre. "Azzy Designs" is the only known skin developer in SL at the writing of this. Macros can be created too to change the look of Barre.

V. LEADING DANCES
A. ADDING DANCERS - EASY
Adding dances takes the form in 3 ways. The first is by the invite button. Clicking on the button gives you a list of avatars in 96 meters to pick from. Second is an attachment orb that is invisible when worn. You can even rez it and change it to a sign if you wish for clubs. Third is Club Invite. This is the is the second option on the invite button list. Clicking it will send out invites for all available open slots to any one in a 96 meter range.
B. DANCERS CAN ADD AND REMOVE SELVES - YES
Dances can type /11stop or touch the invite orb to leave the HUD. Also the HUD will clear dancers that have left the region.
C. MULTIPLE GROUPS - LEAD 2 OR MORE GROUPS FROM THE SAME HUD
Barre only has the ability for the host to solo while the rest of the group is dancing a separate dance. The host may return to the group simply by clicking the main dance again.
D. START DANCES - STARTING ANYWHERE IN THE ANIMATION (E.G. IN THE MIDDLE)
Starting in the middle of an animation is not possible in SL.
E. RANDOM MODE - YES
Random mode capable. Dances that are timed will jump to next random dance if there time is shorter then that random timer setting.
F. OPTIONAL NO DANCE MODE FOR THE LEADER - YES
Host can turn off their animation.

VI. SEQUENCES
A. ALLOWS USE OF DANCE SEQUENCES - YES
Designed around sequences, Barre v3 has a unique duel timer. This secondary intuitive timer manages region lag to help your sequence stay on track and on time. With its macro engine you can run stage effects, emotes, even sounds that are timed to match your dances. GOR dancers use the emote tools extensively.
B. DANCE LOOP TIME - AUTOMATICALLY DETERMINES

Barre is a minimalist HUD. It was designed to have to lowest script impact possible in its default state. The scripts are written in a way to not crave CPU cycles. The over all structure is module to allow for only needed scripts to be ran in the HUD.

During the running of the cache loader any avatar on the HUD will automatically load their cache too.
D. INFORMS PEOPLE ABOUT AVATAR IMPOSTERS - OPTIONAL
Barre does not violate the Terms of Service of SL having such an option would be a violation. Collecting, storing and sharing information about real life identities of avatars in SL is an infringement

Add-ons are for sale to accent Barre's features. 3rd party developers are developing additional drop in features. Current ones underdevelopment that I am aware of are Couples Dance add-on, Multi Groups, DJ tools, Shared Animations, Note Card Store...
B. ANIMATION OVERRIDE - YES
The SL entertainers that contributed to the design of Barre made it very clear... an AO and its animations would just get in the way of a true dance HUD. AO was the first feature voted out of Barre. The consensus was that Phoenix viewer has an AO and having one in a dance HUD would be over kill. They also loved the idea of less scripts and more features.

The Config Questions are very focused on "how many notecards" or "card length" etc... DC & our new Smart HUD (you should add that one too) are totally different

NAME OF HUD: Fleursoft DanceHUD rev 1.3

I. CAPACITY
A. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF DANCES IN HUD - Same limit as SL - I've tested with over 1000 dances in the HUD.
B. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF DANCERS TO LEAD - Most I've danced with at one time was 18 - it should work with more - just copy the ~FS Dance ## script as appropriate and use the '/98sd #' command to enable the dancers in the HUD (by default there are 10 active dancer scripts with 10 scripts stopped - the sd command can change the number of active dancer scripts)..
C. MAXIMUM SIZE OF A NOTE CARD - Reads 64,000 characters from a notecard. Large notecards will automatically fill in from the active menu to the next menu - as appropriate. Fleursoft can load multiple notecards - just load it and the additional sequences will be appended to the current menu (or menus that follow when the number of sequences approaches 150 or memory of a menu gets low). There are seperate menus for dance sequences (1 to 10). Each menu holds a max of 150 sequences for a total of 1,500 sequences. This can be less if the length of the sequences is longer.

II. NAVIGATION
A. DANCES VISIBLE AT ONE TIME - 30 dance sequences or animations are visable on every menu.

III. ORGANIZATION
A. ORGANIZATIONAL SYSTEMS
There are several ways to organize dances:
- you can group them by menu number using a keyword: [menu 2]name-for-menu\   - which will identify the sequences that follow as going to menu 2 and lets you set the menu name that is displayed when you click '2' to see menu 2.
- Another grouping can be done by dance style using two keywords: [stylemenu 2]Jazz   - sets menu 2 for the dance style of 'Jazz'.
   Then before/or in a sequence - use a keyword to specify the style of dances: [style]Jazz | [name]something...   - this will set the dance style for sequence something to 'Jazz' and that will get it automatically added to menu 2 when the notecard is loaded.
- Free form - any sequences on a notecard are loaded from the top to the bottom of the notecard. As a menu fills (150 sequences or gets low on memory), the dance sequences will be added to the next menu (and so on).
You also have the option of comments in the dance sequence notecard (start a line with a # and type anything you want after it).
Or you can have just a blank line (no space character required).
There is an administrative menu option to enable/disable the display of comments and/or blank lines.
B. EASE OF USE - In usage - I tried hard to minimize the interface. I believe it is fairly obvious what to do to dance. Now the harder part is in getting dances into the HUD and setting up dance sequences and organizing the sequences. I added a Transfer script so that it is fairly easy to transfer copy dance animations (and other items) to the Fleursoft DanceHUD. The dancehud has the ability to have complex dance sequences - and that will require some reading of the documentation to understand. Mostly - it'll work with about any Dance Queens sequence. Almost all of the keywords are included ([rez] is not, as an example). There are some new keywords - like [nextsequence]sequencename - which can be used to dance 'sequencename'. I tried especially hard to make errors that can appear to be fairly obvious as to what happened and why. Dance sequences are able to be as long as you like with the Fleursoft DanceHUD.

IV. SIZE AND APPEARANCE
A. SIZE ON SCREEN WHEN DANCING - There are two answers
- when minimized: small (less than 10% width of the screen and about 16 pixels high). All menus will appear in the local chat window for the owner of the DanceHUD - so you can use: /98#3 for example to execute whatever is item 3 on the current menu.
- There is a theme that is transparent - so the text/buttons show up - but nothing much else as you can see through the DanceHUD with that theme.
B. SIZE ON SCREEN WHEN CLICKING - You can resize the Fleursoft DanceHUD - up or down in vertical or horozontal size. The different buttons are fairly easy to click and sequence names too - depends on the size that you like to use.
C. COLOR AND TEXTURE MODIFIABLE - You can create your own theme for any color scheme you want. The background of the dance sequences names will be a single color (no texture there). V. LEADING DANCES
A. ADDING DANCERS - EASY - There is a 'auto invite' button on the top of the DanceHUD (looks like a '+') which will invite everyone in radar range. Anyone who rejects will not be invited again. Radar is limited to the closest 16 avatars - so positioning matters. You can also add and remove individual dancers with a couple more clicks (click 'A' for administrative menu, click 'Add dancers', a list of peoples names that are not currently dancing with you is displayed and you click each person to add. You stay on that menu until you decide to leave it or all the people have been added - it will go back to the administrative menu automatically in that case).
Adding any dancer on the sim should be one click
B. DANCERS CAN ADD AND REMOVE SELVES - Dancers can remove themselves (/98stop)
C. MULTIPLE GROUPS - LEAD 2 OR MORE GROUPS FROM THE SAME HUD - up to 11 dancers groups can be lead from the same DanceHUD. It requires some effort - dancers need to be setup in the DanceHUD to be in the appropriate dancer groups AND the dance sequences you want to dance have to have the appropriate keywords to enable this to work well. There is a new keyword for this: [group]groupname | - put this into a sequence to have a specific group of dancers perform a specific set of animations. There are some pre-defined group names (all, female, male, left, center, right, group1, group2, group3, group4, group5 and group6) which you can change all of them but 'all'. A sequence with a male and a female group would look like this:

This can also be used for secondary animations by doing something like:

All dancers with this sequence will start dance1, then secondaryDance1 immediately after - both animations will be active for 30 seconds in this example.
D. START DANCES - Sequences start at the beginning of a dance animation. It is possible to start at a later time in a second or third dance animation using the [group]All keyword - but will take some explaining.

B. DANCE LOOP TIME - Automatically determines but doesn't report it to you.
C. SEQUENCE CREATION - Can create with HUD - yes - this is recording of freestyle dancing. Adds a sequence to the active menu when you hit stop. You can also type /98remember - and it will add the to the currently active menu. This is very handy for tweaking a sequence and trying it again until you get it perfect. Saves a lot of cycle time.
VII. PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
A. THE HUD SHOULD BE THE LOWEST PRICE - L$500 for support, there will be an open source version (cost planned at L$0) which does not include automatic updates or Transfer by the end of Janurary (is the plan)
B. AVAILABLE EASILY - In world and in Marketplace - permissions on the DanceHUD are modify/copy (no transfer). Most scripts within are modify/copy (no transfer). There are a couple of scripts that are no-modify/copy/no-transfer. The open source version will be full permissions.

IX. LAG
A. ADDS DANCES TO YOUR CACHE - This happens as you dance automatically by everything. The Fleursoft DanceHUD has a 'Load all animations' administrative menu option that will dance each animation in the inventory of the DanceHUD for 0.1 seconds. Even better is that each dancer that is added dances a different set of dances. So if it takes 100 seconds to load my animations in my dancehud into the simulation cache, by adding a dancer it will take 50 seconds instead. Adding two more dancers will take the loading of all animations down to 25 seconds.
B. HUD SCRIPT RESOURCES - The script resources are as minimal as I could make them - the Fleursoft DanceHUD operates differently than most others. Most HUDs will load a sequence and when you dance it - it will try to figure out what it needs to do (costing more in script resources). The Fleursoft DanceHUD will figure out what the sequences intend to do when the sequences are loaded. This means that while dancing, the Fleursoft DanceHUD takes up a lot less resources - it just plays back the directions of what to do. I've danced without any lag on a sim with 72 avatars with the Fleursoft.
C. ADDS DANCES TO OTHERS' CACHE - I believe this is automatic too - assuming they have the dancers on the screen while you dance.
D. INFORMS PEOPLE ABOUT AVATAR IMPOSTERS - I don't know how to calculate or explain this one.

X. HELP
A. AVAILABLE HELP - Type: /98help - it will try to help in brief terms as much as possible.

A. REZZ ITEMS - No - would be easy to add. I added something for instructors called 'Give'. This allows you to have a sequence that will automatically give out a notecard describing the sequence or something else. In the sequence just add: [give]item-name - when the dancehud encounters the [give] keyword - it will give the 'item-name' to all of the current dancers. You can also type: /98give item-name   - which will also do the same. Not the same as rez - but is a very handy thing for lessons on dance sequences. The 'give' support in the dancehud is smart - it will only give the item to each dancer once - so if you have a sequence the loops - the dancers will all only get the item once (it remembers the last 10 items given out).
B. ANIMATION OVERRIDE - Yes - built in ZHAO II 3.0 (slightly modified to allow 30 sits via the dancehud, also removed timing of an AO animation as a simplification). I've also made is so that if the AO is on, then dancing is off. If dancing is on, then the AO is off. Can't mix them at all with the Fleursoft DanceHUD.

A few days ago Diddy Hyun stopped by Dance Central and we did a little "Workout" session. Workout is the name of a weekday morning dance session that I used to have when I owned a Blues Club a few years ago. Diddy did the leading and showed us some of her recent choreography work. Diddy turns out about one show every two weeks and is both one of the most prolific and one of the best choreographers in SL.

One of the additional nice things about Diddy is that she shares her skills. She gave me the sequences she used for each song. Diddy choreographs to specific songs so these fit perfectly. Of course, you can use sequences designed for a specific song with others that are similar in speed.

Note that Diddy uses the GO command in Huddles which send the dance sequence to a numbered line. You may have to change the number to make it work.

Today I sent out the Desert Show, which is a simple MPC-based rug for belly dancing. It places a dancer in the center with up to eight cushions for the watchers. Use it with your HUD to dance your favorite dances. Here it is with Riddle in costume ready for a dance ...

Sirena Lauria sent over her list of free Belly Dancing resources. Riddle gave us a camel and a very nice desert tent. I added some stuff too and put it all in a box called DANCE QUEENS - Belly Dancing Resources and put the box in the Dance Central Free Stuff Box.

Comparison of Dance HUDs - Process

In November of last year we identified the different Dance HUDs available in SL and placed them in four categories. Now we are ready to compare the Dance HUDs and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each. We may be able to make recommendations on which Dance HUD best meets our needs.

Here is the process I would like to follow to complete this:

1. Start with the Category 4 Dance HUDs. When we finish with the Category 4, we will move to the Category 3 Dance HUDs, if there is a need.

2. Ask each of the Category 4 Dance HUD makers to comment on how their HUD compares against the criteria we have established for comparing HUDs.

3. Ask volunteer DANCE QUEENS members to confirm and complete how each Dance HUD compares with the criteria. The names of the volunteers will be kept confidential.

4. Publish the preliminary results without making a recommendation and ask DANCE QUEENS members to comment.

5. Modify the results based on the comments.

6. Make final recommendations.

I expect that this process will take several weeks to complete for the Category 4 HUDs. If you would like to help in analyzing any of the HUDs, please IM me. This is especially true if you use regularly any of the Category 4 HUDs.

Hironics MPC is a system for controlling dancer positions and animations. It does not allow for sequenced dancing and the movements between positions are instant, but it does allow for copying and transfering the contollers that you make. Recently, I made a position controller for up to eight dancers called the DANCE QUEENS - 8 Dancer Positioner as an example of how you can use this tool. The 8 Dance Positioner only places dancers at predefined positions. You need to use your dance HUD to make the dancers dance. It is available at Dance Central in the Free Stuff Box.

Here is how it works.

1. Rezz the 8 Dancer Positioner.
2. Sit on the Positioner to get a menu. Each person is added in order from position 1 to 8. You can change your position to an available position using the menu. Each dancer is animated using the default "standing" animation, which is a low priority anim.
3. There are 16 predefined arrangements for the eight dancers. To access the arrangements click on the menu. All the dancers move to the chosen arrangement.
4. Use your dance HUD to make the dancers dance.

The database is online now with over 6000 anims listed. Of course the database is incomplete. There are many anims and dances not in it and I will add them when I learn about them. If you have a list of dances or anims that are not in the database, send it to me.

There is also a lot of incomplete information in the database. Mainly this is classifying dances and anims into CATEGORIES and STYLES. Some work is underway on this. Psyche Lunasea and I are working on classifying the couples dances and should finish in early January. Once we finish, I will update the listing and you can see our work and hopefully correct our mistakes.

You can help. If you are knowledgeable of a specific style of dance, help us identify dances that fit that style. Today, Halfpint Raymaker sent me links to four videos of Chicago Stepping. This will help us learn what that specific style is. Hopefully, Half will serve as an expert on Chicago Stepping and help us with identifying dances that fit that STYLE.

The reason for all this is to help us know which anims may best fit our needs. Today an example of this was discussed in the Group IM. Deb Heron was looking for Tribal - American Indian dances. Although I had not identified American Indian dances, they certainly are a STYLE that fits into the Traditional CATEGORY. Lotus Mandel provided a list, which was shared on the group IM. I will add her list to the database so all of us can see it in the next update.

I was searching on SL Marketplace for something and came across the !Hironic - MPC Box. I had heard of it before as an alternate way to move avatars in a show. It is used mainly for controlling poses in furniture and is a competitve product to the XPOSE. I bought it for 2000 L and took a look at it. I will have to say the instuctions are not easy to understand, but eventually I figured it out. Here is what it does for dancing:

Controls multiple avatars so that they can dance individually or in sync
Controls couples dancing
Moves avatars to specified positions instantly on a click

In this way it is very similar to the XPOSE without the ability to rezz items. It lacks the ability to move avatars from one position to another over time (like the DB System and DanceMaster) and cannot do sequenced choreography. It also is not a competitor to the INTAN or TIS Hybrid since it doesnt rezz couples pose balls anywhere on demand.

It does have one very good feature. Once you make an object with the MPC system, you can sell it or give it away. So, I decided to make a simple thing I call the DANCE QUEENS - Line Dancer and give it away so you can see how it works. You can get it at Dance Central in the Free Stuff Box. It is copy transfer.

Here is what I did. I put in 33 dances that are both copy and transfer. These are from the DANCE QUEENS Freebie Dance Pack. I then followed the instructions to make a line of up to five avatars all facing the same direction. Each avatar can dance individually or can dance in sync. I didnt use the feature that controls couples dancing since I think it is of limited usefulness. Other products do this better.

Try the Line Dancer to see if you like the capabilities of it. Just rezz it and sit on it to get a menu. If you buy the MPC system, I can help you with the basics.

In the next month or so I plan to review the options for controlling show dancing. These include the DB System, DanceMaster, XPOSE, and the MPC sustem. I expect the MPC system will be the least capable of the choices available, but the option of inexpensively making salable or give-away products is a real benefit.
