Bones



Not many reasons or topics to blog about on DQ lately so it is reenvigorating when a no-brainer raises its head.

There has been a fair amount off drab faces and talk of gloom-and-doom about Sansar and its perceived negative affect on SL; that LL was all but abandoning the future of SL.

So it is very encouraging to hear of a new development. This has the potential to recharge enthusiasm for creators, animators, and dancers...just to name a few that come foremost inmy mind. It can also be a much needed windfall of infused cash and optimism that can have an economic domino effect.


It is in beta now and wants our feedback but.... LL is adding new bones to the avatar structure.

I will let you read about it as it is as new to me as it is to just about everyone who is not involved in it.

Here is the heart of the matter excerpted:

Ever wish you could incorporate a tail, wings, or second set of arms into your avatar? How about having animations for facial expressions and finger movements? Yes, we know that there are some incredibly creative workarounds that give you some of these, but they can't leverage skeletal animation, so they have been very complex, often fragile, and very expensive in performance and resources both in your Viewer and the Simulator.

Introducing Project Bento
We are introducing extensions to the standard Second Life Avatar Skeleton that give you dozens of new bones to support both rigging and animation, and accompanying new attachment points! This extended skeleton, which is fully backward compatible with existing avatars, rigging and animation, gives creators the power to build more sophisticated avatars than ever before. The skeleton extensions include: 
  • 11 extra limb bones for wings, additional arms, or extra legs.
  • 6 tail bones
  • 30 bones in the hands (all 10 fingers!)
  • 30 bones for facial expressions
  • 2 other new bones in the head for animating ears or antennae
  • 13 new attachment points associated with the new bones

I can imagine an onset of Disney-ish type characters into dance that can have a wide range of expression via wings, tails, horns, antennae, tentacles, ears, and other as yet unimagined appendages.

I can see the ability (hopefully) to create mouth movement in sync with dialog.

 I can see the importance of the facial close-up as a means of conveying emotions. This can lend more credence to audience-directed camming

 And I can envision a whole industry of animated-emotions and phonetic-matching mouthing (maybe).

Of course there is the potential for all kinds of new dances, AO's, and poses with the added expression of hands as communicators of emotion.

And with new attach-points will come new accesories, addons, clothing attire, to help adorn whatever new creatures spawn from creative minds.

My gut says a lot of half-human/half-creature avatars will make their way into the dance-scene and story telling.....maybe some real-time morphing....I can see evil curses that transform humans into creatures....kissed frogs or other as-yet-unimagined creatures  that turn into royalty.

  1. I don't know, but it would be nice to see natural smiles on avatars rather than those ones now that make them look like they've had a lobotomy. Them random smilers scare me.
