DANCE QUEENS Communication

DANCE QUEENS Communication 120609

Today I had a conversation with a DANCE QUEENS member who was upset with the Group IMs that announce shows. She told me that they are frequent and long. She suggested forming a second group for those who want to receive such notices.

WOW! What to communicate and how to do it. These have been issues for quite a while in DANCE QUEENS.

WHAT TO COMMUNICATE

I have taken the approach that anything to do with dancing is appropriate content for DANCE QUEENS. I realize that few people have interest in all of the information provided. I get both positive and negative comments about almost every subject. The concern raised above is specific to dance shows. Many people do not want to get group IMs about the dance shows that different groups do, but, I get many people who love to hear about them so they can go to see the talent displayed and learn. The same is true for every subject from dance sequences to Who's Who in Dance to the database.

Unless there is a subject within DANCE QUEENS that is of no interest to the vast majority of members, I want to continue to provide information about the myriad aspects of dancing in SL.

HOW TO COMMUNICATE

So, the real question is how to communicate DANCE QUEENS information so that members get what they want and have minimal disturbance about the information they don't want.

Here are the options as I see them:

OPTION 1 - NO CHANGE
The blog continues to be the main source of communication with anyone being allowed to post information. Daily Notices are restricted to Nottoo and Riddle and are for identifying the events of the day.Group IMs are for any member to ask questions or to post information about shows or any other aspect of dancing.

OPTION 2 - SAME AS NOW BUT ELIMINATE GROUP IMs
Group IMs can be eliminated and information communicated entirely through Daily Notices and the blog. This would solve the problem of undesired group IMs but would also stop the question and answer aspect of the group IM.

OPTION 3 - SET UP A SEPARATE GROUP FOR SHOW ANNOUNCEMENTS
This is the approach that was suggested. I can easily form another group, for example Dance Shows, and ask that show related announcement be made through that group's IMs. This would require interested members to join the second group and would require me to monitor the DANCE QUEENS group IMs to be sure that dance show information was not being sent.

One of the features of DANCE QUEENS that is not very well used is the group calendar. The intent of the group calendar is for dance groups to link their calendars to the DANCE QUEENS calendar and then their shows would be listed. Unfortunately, several things make this not widely used. First, is that many groups do not have an online calendar. You cannot link what you don't have. Second, even with Montana Ballard and Wickman Gibbs' help, it is still sometimes a challenging process to do the linking. If there are other options for a group calendar, I am willing to consider them.

Please, give your feedback on the options for communication.

  1. I don't like getting frequent LARGE IMs about shows. It's great to know that there's a show, but I don't like to see huge announcements that take up my screen. I'd love to see a second group for announcements, people using the calendar, or restriction of announcements to "XYZ show at 00:00 SL time, 'SLURL' or 'URL WITH MORE INFO'". I don't like to think of the Dance Queens posts as mostly ads.
