Inside an SL Dance Show

Inside an SL Dance Show 111010

Diddy Hyun gave us an inside look at how she runs an SL Dance Show last Saturday (8 October 2011) at Dance Central. About 25 Dance Queens members were there to see the show, then hear Diddy explain how she and the other show members (Rayzza Rubble and Jam Xurina) work with the Huddles Dance HUDs , the XPOSE, the DB Dance System and streaming to manage all aspects of the show. Diddy provided the Dance Sequence notecards, the XPOSE .MENUITEMS and .POSITIONS notecards, and the DB System details for us to see. Riddlebox Ribble recorded the entire show and created an abbreviated video version of it so you can see how all the aspects of the show come together.

Here is what is in this note:

1. The supporting information about the Huddles notecards, the XPOSE notecards and the DB System.
2. A description of what Diddy did to create the Show - Before the Show
3. A step-by-step review of the video and what was going on behind the scenes.

2. Two XPOSE systems were used by Diddy and Jam. Diddy rezzed the sets with one and Jam controlled the curtains with the other. Although the XPOSE can also be used to control dancer positions and sequences, Diddy chose to use the XPOSE systems only for rezzing the sets and curtains. Here are the .MENUITEMS and .POSITIONS notecards for both:

3. Diddy set up the DB Dance System to control the dancer positions, but she didn't save the positions for us.

4. Jam ran the streaming of the show.

===================

BEFORE THE SHOW
The first step was to decide the topic of the show. Diddy chose a couple meeting and getting together in a five-song (five act) show as the plot. The songs were selected based on Diddy's feel for the music and how each song fit the script that she wrote. The script and song choices were done together.

Next, Diddy created the scenery concepts. For example in Act 1 the female dancer is in a room visible from outside and the male is outside watching and wanting her. The scenery both limits and supports the dances. In Act 1 the confined space for the female dancer limited the choice of dances that Diddy could use in the choreography. The Act 1 scenery also conveyed the idea of the male and female seeing each other for the first time.

With the scenery decided the choreography was next. Diddy is an experienced Sequenced Chroegrapher, and she followed the basic approach for Sequenced Choreography. Since two dancers were sometimes dancing different dances and sometimes dancing the same synchronized dances, Diddy had to figure out how to best control them. She chose to use two Huddles HUDs that she would wear and operate. One would control her and the other Ray. When both she and Ray needed to dance the same dance in sync, she would add Ray to her HUD before the Act and remove him after the Act. She solved the issue of synchronizing the dancers at other times by mapping both HUDs to the "F"  keys of her computer keyboard.

Along with the dance sequences Diddy determined the precise location she wanted the dancers to be for each song. She entered this in the DB Dance System. The DB system can also be used to control the dances used but Diddy did not use this feature.

The show required that the male and female change costumes. This meant that Diddy had to have a separation between acts or risk clothing problems because of lag. She selected outifts that met her needs for each scene and built in time between the Acts for costume changes. She did this by adding a curtain bewteen Acts in a separate XPOSE.

Next, Diddy assembled the components of the show:

1. Two HUDs with the dances, notecards with sequences and mapped to the "F"  keys.
2. Two XPOSE systems with one for the curtains and one for the sets.
3. One DB System for controlling the dancers' positions.

She then recorded the scripts and used Jam's streaming capabilities for delivering the content.

Since there was too much to do for one person to control all the sequences, rezzing, dancer positioning and streaming during the show, Diddy assigned responsibilities to the cast members.

Finally, the cast practiced.

STEP-BY-STEP REVIEW

During the show Bubble Roffo helped Diddy by calling out for those of us watching, what was going on. I have matched DIDDY'S COMMENTS with the time on the youtube video.

TIME 0:00
BEFORE A SHOW ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR DANCE HUD IS WARMED UP BY DANCING THE DANCES YOU HAVE USED , AND ALSO MAKE SURE THE CHANGES OF CLOTHES THAT YOU NEED ARE READY IN FOLDERS. FOR THIS SHOW I AM USING 2 XPOSES 2 HUDS AND ZZ'S MOVE SYSTEM. RAY IS WORKING THE LIGHTS AND ALSO THE MAIN XPOSE. JAM THE DJ IS WORKING THE OTHER XPOSE FOR THE CURTAIN.
TODAY I AM WORKING BOTH THE HUDS AND DS SYSTEM.

ITS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO GET HELP FROM YOUR DANCE GROUP MEMBERS WHICH TAKES THE PRESSURE OF YOURSELF WITH ALL THE HUDS.

I HAVE MY DANCE HUDS SET UP AND ACTIVATED FOR USING THE SAME F KEYS THIS MAKES US DANCE AT EXACTLY THE SAME TIME WITH JUST ONE PRESS OF A F KEY.

OUR FIRST DANCE WE ARE READY BEHIND THE CURTAIN (NO PEEPING YET LOL )
WE ARE BOTH CHANGED AND READY TO GO RAY AND I ARE ON OUR DANCE STICKS AND I HAVE MOVED THE DS SYTEM TO THE FIRST POSTION, ALREADY FOR ACTION.
RAY IS ON MY SECOUND HUD AND I WILL DANCE THE MAIN HUD. I HAVE HIT THE ME BUTTON ON MY SECOUND  HUD TO STOP ME DANCING ON THAT ONE.

=====

TIME 0:01 The Show Starts

Notice that Diddy and Ray start at the same time because both are linked to the F keys. Ray is moving across the stage because Diddy has set up small distances for Ray to move with the DB Dance System.

You can see that Diddy is dancing in a small space so her choreography has to match the visible space.

=====

TIME 1:59 Act 1 Ends

THE DANCE FINISHES. JAM REZZES THE CURTAIN FROM HIS XPOSE AND RAY REZZERS THE NEW STAGE.

Notice that Jam is announcing rather than using recorded sound. This makes it easier for him to be sure that both Diddy and Ray are ready for Act 2.

=====

TIME 2:19 Act 2 Starts

Again Diddy moves Ray into place using the DB System. Movement from one position to another on stage without jumping is always a challenge in SL.

=====

TIME 3:57 ACT 2 Ends

As Act 2 ends listen for the applause. As part of the recording Jam has meshed the song with applause.

DANCE FINISHES. JAM REZZES THE CURTAIN AND RAY REZZERS THE NEW SET. I MOVE THE DS TO THE NEXT MOVE AND INVITE RAY TO THE MAIN HUD BECAUSE ON THIS DANCE HUD 2 IS NOT USED. RAY AND I CHANGE CLOTHES AND WE ARE READY FOR OUR NEXT SONG.

=====

TIME 4:21 ACT 3 Begins

In this Act both Diddy and Ray dance in sequence using one HUD. At the end of the song Diddy has choreographed a nice finish move for the two of them (TIME 5:56).

=====

TIME 5:59 ACT 3 Ends

DANCE FINSHES. JAM DOES THE CURTAIN AGAIN. RAY CHANGES THE SET AND LIGHTS. I MOVE THE DANCE SYSTEM TO THE NEXT MOVE. WE CHANGE CLOTHES.

Riddle chose to pan out so you can see the audience and the stage. When you do a show, you need to think about what the audience can see. If you can, arrange the audience area to remove obstacles and make them comfortable.

=====

TIME 6:24 ACT 4 Begins

Although Riddle had to condense the Act, look at the dance sequence that Diddy choregraphed. Diddy uses the Choreography grid and her transtions are usually really good ... no jumps. I love the flip at the end.

=====

TIME 7:58 ACT 4 Ends

DANCE FINSHES. JAM DOES THE CURTAIN AGAIN. RAY CHANGES THE SET AND LIGHTS. I MOVE THE DANCE SYSTEM TO THE NEXT MOVE. WE CHANGE CLOTHES
I TAKE RAY OFF THE MAIN HUD AND RE INVITE HIM TO THE SECOND HUD AND WE ARE READY AGAIN.

=====

TIME 8:10 ACT 5 Begins

In this Act a clothes removal takes place. Sometimes, clothes changes are difficult to do when there is a large crowd. In this Act lighting changes are also quite important. See how Diddy builds in a switch from a regular dance to a pole dance at 9:14 without a noticeable jump ... very nice.

===================

This gives you a good insight to how a dance show is done.
